If the games are being produced with a small budget and a short development cycle then they're probably not going to be very long. If The Order taught us anything it's that people don't really want to buy expensive games that are only 5-6 hours long. A $40 price tag would be a better move to entice a larger audience.

Disgaea. AA franchise in which each game requires at least 80 hours to finish the story.

And then about 250 hours for the post game. Definitely makes a profit with 500k sales too.

Edit : Actually i've never played a AA japanese games that was uner 40 hours long. Only AAA games.

SRPGs and JRPGs are known for being incredibly long. What a strange comparison.

Just pointing out that it's possible to release a "low" budget game with heavy content. And overall AA japanese games tend to have more content than their AAA counterparts lately (I've seen more content in Atelier and Neptunia than in FF and Tales of this gen)

Captain Toad somehow preceded Sly Cooper?

I actually like this idea! I guess only certain genres would benefit from being a mid-tier game for $40; 2D and 3D platformers would suit this price class pretty well, while war sims (CoD, Battlefield) would suffer. That's what I think at least.

Sony should have done this for the vita. Handelds are perfect for lower budget games, and the double touch screen could allow good gameplay elements for platformers.

Isn't portable games pretty cheap as it is? I was thinking more having Rayman: Legends/Origins be a $40 title. Probably would have helped the game(s).

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Sly Cooper was a $40 game? Which instalment? And did it help the sales?

"Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is coming February 5, but it will require a few less coins than you might have been expecting. Sony announced today that the game will cost $39.99 for the PlayStation 3 version. As the game is part of the cross buy program, the $40 price tag includes a download of the Vita game at no extra cost."  http://www.shacknews.com/article/77311/sly-cooper-4-to-cost-40-on-ps3-30-on

VGC has sales at 0.49M for the PS3 version.

Sony has been releasing games at different price points for quite awhile.

Thieves in Time for PS3 and PSV. It flopped regardless, and that would be the reason why the OP didn't use it as an example.

Completely untrue. Verendus (Sony employee on GAF) said the game was successful and a fifth game was in production. I didn't mention it because I forgot about it, but it does strengthen my argument so I should have brought it up.

Don't argue with me. I'm right.

You're finally learning.

The biggest thing i miss from playstation 1 & 2 era is the mid tier games. A big percentage of games i enjoyed was from that category. Give unique and innovative games to people like clock tower , kagero deception , parasite eve , and a tone of others.

Ape Escape, MediEvil and Parappa should come back.

Add Folklore, Wipeout, Arc the Lad (just remake 1&2), Crash, Colony Wars, Dark Cloud, Alundra & Twisted Metal to that. (Would put Amplitude in there, but that's already being taken care of!)
