Epic Games - Consoles have left PC games behind

March 10th, 2008

Epic Games co-founder Tim Sweeney says that consoles are definitely the dominant force in the gaming industry. He says that PC games have been catering to the high-end user, which is only a small percentage of the market. The mainstream PC user doesn’t play games because their computer cannot handle it, but it can do MySpace, Facebook, and other things like that just fine. Ignoring the mainstream user has alienated PC gamers, and that’s why things have gone downhill.

I really love consoles because I don’t have to worry about upgrading them. Buying a PC is such a painful experience. There are so many things that can block you from enjoying any number of games. To buy a gaming platform that already has obsolete parts just 6 months after purchasing…that doesn’t make sense. A console gives you anywhere from 4-6 years…which is a much better turnaround in my opinion.

I disagree. PC's were never very casual except for The Sims 2 and that's only because that game can practically run on any computer.

PC games are designed with the "hardcore" in mind because they are the only people playing games on it. Just look at Unreal Tournament. People don't play because the learning curve is so steep and the people who play that game play it on a competitive level. So new people to the fray just give up because they are no good. There are exceptions to this like I said earlier (with Sims 2) but do you guys think PC games are being left behind?

this is basically all intel's doing, them with their trash integrated GPUs.

But still the economy is the main reason why people see a $200 emachine with 4 year old parts inside and buy it expecting it to get the full advantage of a $450 low-end gaming PC computer. People are just retarded when it comes to their money.

PC gaming is better than console gaming. Always.     We are Anonymous, We are Legion    Kick-ass interview   Great Flash Series Here    Anime Ratings     Make and Play Please

Really? They integrate the GPU into the motherboard itself so you can't swap it out? or their GPU's just suck in general (I got an ATI Radeon X1250, soon will be a Radeon HD 3870 X2)?

Bump.

Maybe if Epic wouldn't make consolized garbage and then try to sell it PC gamers (UTIII, Gears of War) they'd get more sales. Crysis already broke a million DESPITE it's insane hardware requirements, so it's definitely not the hardware that's an issue.

There are plenty of PC gamers out there that are willing to buy GOOD PC games.

It's not just integrated graphics at fault, even some companies that advertise a system with a video card usually put a weak one in it. Still though with StarCraft 2, The Sims 3, Spore, and many other games PC gaming is far from dead.

I agree. You can buy the cheapest computer out there, and it can do anything you could want, except play games.

And if you want to play PC games, then you need to spend hundreds, if not thousands more just for that. And then be prepared to upgrade at least yearly. It's bull$#!^.

I never used to play on consoles (except with my kids). But my $1000 laptop can't play 90% of current PC games. So what do I do? Buy old games for $1-$20 dollars that I missed and buy new games for the Wii instead. My nieghbour is the same way and so is my brother.

The PC gaming industry has put itself out of business as far as I'm concerned by being obsessed with high-end graphics. Pissing me off since I'd love to play Mass Effect and Fable too, but fat chance it'll happen. I'm not going to upgrade for probably another 3 years either. I'll have to catch them then for $10-$20 too.

Well speaking from personal experience, Ive been into PC Gaming for well over over a decade, started with Burger Time/DigDug... to Keen Commander/Duke Nukem I... to SpaceQuest/KingsQuest/PoliceQuest/LeisureSuitLarry... to Carmageddon/GTA/TexMurphy... then Duke3D/Quake/Unreal Tournament...

I used to always prefer PC Gaming over Console gaming, simply because the graphics were incredibly better (Gaming at 1024x720+), the keyboard was tons better, and PC Online dominated consoles

Unfortunetly all thats has turned around for me...Consoles are finally powerful enough to display 720p, Controllers are finally good enough to play a 3D Shooter, and online console gaming is finally here

Another reason I have switched to console gaming is comfort. Sure I can game at a higher resolution on a PC, sure a mouse has better accuracy...but I would sacrifice a little control/accuracy and only 720p graphics just for the comfort of gaming with a small controller in my hand, leaning back on a couch, in front of a big hdtv...compared to hunched over a desk staring at a monitor

So for me its comfort

 With friends.

I'd rather play with people I know who are right beside me.

Now that's comforting!!!!
