Forums - Gaming - PSP Vita next gen PS4 portable

Hmm, 5 or 6 years? Maybe...? Though it seems western devs aren't crazy about making games for portable systems, so even more power wouldn't sway them to make more games for it. Maybe if Sony did a better job and properly supported it with a right price, it could do better next time.

It'll easily be possible. Whether anybody wants it by that point will remain to be seen. 3DS is sub Wii and doing perfectly fine especially compared with Vita.

Streaming services etc will probably be on the verge of well and truly grabbing the market by then.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

If the hardware is identical to that of the PS4, meaning you could play you're entire digital PS4 library on it without any problems, yes there will be a market for it. It could also lengthen PS4 software support, and would mean much better developer support because the PS4 will have a very large install base.

With PS3's hardware including the Cell cpu, it was simply impossible to scale this hardware down to portable level. With PS4 it should be possible in a few years

But like i said it has to be identical to PS4(without disc drive), that is absolutely vital.

Just a thought would it be possible to take the PS4 in 5-6 years and make it portable. You would have instant gaming library and everyone would be experienced making games for it.

Now the power consumption is rumored to be around 130 watts while gaming on the PS4 and the only numbers i can find for the Vita are 7-15 watts.

So your looking at having to decrease power consumption by 90%. I don't think shrinking the components would be to hard with solid state (instead of hard drive) and memory cards and digital (instead of blu-ray). The components will also get smaller as they shrink the cpu/gpu and combine other chips.

But is it possible to save that much power consumption? I have my doubts.

16nm FinFET (from 28nm ---> 60% power reduction at same speeds).

That means by then power consumption goes from 130w ---> 52watts.

The Intels 3D transistors, what others call FinFETs makes a huge impact on power used. The current 28nm is without.

Also the jump from 28 -> 16nm is a pretty big jump (we ve been stuck on 28nm for way to long).

I dont think even 6 years from now a portable version of a ps4 is possible (same hardware just at lower processing nodes). Unless something drastic happens in the battery techology realm.

PS4 slim versions anyone? once they start useing 16nm FF.

If they'd cram 8 Cortex A72 in their next portable and stuff a large enough battery in there, yes they could. But then, the "console on the go" attitude doesn't really pay off for Sony. The 3DS is successful because it's cheaper to develop for and has way more first party support.

The argument that the Vita failed just because "it's a portable made by Sony" shows a severe lack of understanding for why the Vita failed.

If Sony released another handheld, but actually did things right, there's no reason it couldn't be successful. Building a handheld with software and firmware built to compete with consoles and smartphones instead of other handhelds is what killed it.

If Sony makes a Vita successor that is built to take on the Gameboy/DS/3DS audience, they will no doubt find success. This whole idea of "creating a console experience" or "a portable multimedia hub" is what killed it in the first place, because consoles do the console experience better, and smart phones do multimedia experience better, and all that was left was a small handful of games that capitalized on creating a fantastic handheld experience.

There's nothing wrong with having those things as complementary features, but those were the Vita's primary features, as if it was ashamed of being labeled a handheld with uniquely handheld experiences. Both audiences went for the superior alternative, and handheld gamers when for the superior handheld experience.

With the whole ps4 library available on it? It would have absolutely fantastic support by western studios, something that is missing on ALL handhelds this generation.

Depending on the price it'd be very successful.

See this is my thought. But they could take it in stages, first the slim then maybe a laptop for on the road gaming. Then if possible also have a portable to replace the vita (or just continue to sell beside it).

They could also take ps4 and put out a emulator for the vita on later so everything could be on one unit. And make the ps4 sony's Roku/gaming box as well once the price falls to $100. I believe if they did it right you be looking at even a longer lifespan than normal and extremely succesful.
