The argument that the Vita failed just because "it's a portable made by Sony" shows a severe lack of understanding for why the Vita failed.
If Sony released another handheld, but actually did things right, there's no reason it couldn't be successful. Building a handheld with software and firmware built to compete with consoles and smartphones instead of other handhelds is what killed it.
If Sony makes a Vita successor that is built to take on the Gameboy/DS/3DS audience, they will no doubt find success. This whole idea of "creating a console experience" or "a portable multimedia hub" is what killed it in the first place, because consoles do the console experience better, and smart phones do multimedia experience better, and all that was left was a small handful of games that capitalized on creating a fantastic handheld experience.
There's nothing wrong with having those things as complementary features, but those were the Vita's primary features, as if it was ashamed of being labeled a handheld with uniquely handheld experiences. Both audiences went for the superior alternative, and handheld gamers when for the superior handheld experience.
