A game with strong appeal will sell consoles to people who want the game but don't already own the system, thus pushing against the install base barrier.

Uh, and? Also doesn't make much sense for you to say that considering you just brought up MK8 saying it would outsell MKDD (unlikely btw) thus making it more appealing, yet the GC will still have sold better.

MK8 will sell more than Double Dash because it is a more appealing game, DD's larger base won't give it the win because it's less desirable.

And it will most likely outsell it, DD sold 6.95m, MK8 was at 4.77m in January and is still going strong.

I was asking because whether it does or not doesn't prove whether Sunshine would sell better if it had more people to sell to.

What I'm saying is that while there is a relationship between software sales and install base, said relationship is not a fixed, linear one.

If Sunshine were a more desirable product, it wouldn't just have sold to more existing Gamecube owners, it would have motivated more non-Gamecube owners to buy the console for it.

Similarly, if Galaxy weren't the more desirable game, it would have sold less than Sunshine in spite of the bigger install base.

People defending 3DWorld has not any argument. People didn't wanted that. Enough. It doesn't mean the game is bad or trash, but it is not what people expected and that will always affect its potential sales and Wii U appeal.

But you don't know if everyone who bought Sunshine bought the Gamecube specifically for it, nor if everyone who bought Galaxy only did so after they had enough Wii Sports action, though seeing as Wii's were selling out before Galaxy arrived the latter is very likely.

My point is 3D Mario has consistently had one of the highest attach rates on every console it's been on, thus it's one of the most appealing games to those who pick up said consoles, however many that may be, and regardless of what 3D Mario it is. So I say it doesn't matter what 3D Mario you put in World's place, sales would be roughly the same, though of course no proof of that.

So you're speaking for everyone again, despite a significant portion of the Wii U base and reviewers n journalist disagreeing with you. Wii U's bad sales are not the result of any one game, and obviously not one that released after it was already selling poorly.

Software sells consoles. Unambitious unwatend games are not going to sell consoles.

People want MK+SSB alot more but WiiU is in the same situation, and looking at SM3DL sales on 3ds, i definitely disagree with you. Not saying Galaxy game couldn't do better, but lets not straight up talk down upon 3D World.

That's part of it sure, but not everything, see N64/GCN. Also the 3DS is selling purely off of "unambitious" games, and just lol @ Mario/Smash/Kart/etc. being unwanted.

Mario Kart 8 and Smash Brothers have generally been exactly what the "fans" wanted ... and they haven't done sh*t for Wii U sales. It's still well on pace to finish below the GameCube.

So this idea that Nintendo would have significantly more Wii Us sold now if Mario was a little different is bollocks.

To be honest head to head, Mario 3D World if it was on the Wii might've outsold both Galaxy 1 and 2 just because of the multiplayer component.
