Metroid Prime 3 didn't do shit for the Wii either, lol. Just a shade over 1 million despite being released at the height of the Wii's popularity is actually fairly disappointing. Nintendo could've released a Mario Poops game about Mario on a toilet for 4 hours and had it sell 2-3 million+ early on in the Wii cycle. Everyone was hot on Wii Sports, and having some Mario was like having some pie for desert, everyone likes pie for desert, but don't get it twisted ... Wii Sports is what got them into the restaurant. Wii Sports was the main course, Mario was the side dish.

Good. You have prove my point then. Wii Sports (software), Wii Fit (software), Wii Play (software) sold all those consoles. Therefore, software sells consoles. Now, what happens when you don't have software that appeals?

Nintendo could make the greatest 3D Mario game ever ... Wii U sales would still be about the same.
Arguably they made the greatest Mario Kart game ever for Wii U, and this is a franchise that historically has outsold Mario 3D games most times out ... and it hasn't done shit to save the Wii U from being a failure.
The same 4-5 Nintendo IP aren't enough to save a console platform. Doesn't matter how good they are either. I think that much is now fairly well established. They can help, but they're not getting you past 25 million if you have nothing else to sell with.
