Forums - Gaming - What is the fate of Crash Bandicoot?

Crash Bandicoot is one of my favorite franchises. What's the latest on Crash Bandicoot as a game? The last I remember is Activition taking Crash Bandicoot off of their website and then denying Naughty Dog to include Crash Bandicoot in a fan art compeition. The whole situation leaves me puzzled.

Future

On a Kotaku interview with Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg regarding the future of the Crash series, he said, "I don't have anything official to announce, but I can speak as an individual, I love Crash Bandicoot. Those were some of my favorite video games growing up. And I would love to find a way to bring him back, if we could."[27] Andy Gavin, co-creator of Crash Bandicoot, has said that he would love to see a HD version of the marsupial's first four games, or even a full blown reboot.[28] Jason Rubin, co-creator of Crash Bandicoot, said he is hopeful that Activision will "Bring Crash back to their glory days and that the character is still very dear to fans between 18–49 years".[29] A new design of Crash Bandicoot has been spotted in a photo from the Vicarious Visions's studio, raising rumors that a new game might be in development,[30] though this was later confirmed to be concept art from a previous Crash Bandicoot cancelled game.[31]

In June 2013, co-creator Andy Gavin suggested ways to revitalize the series. "Crash needs a total reboot. There's an opportunity to reset the history, and go back to his creation story and the original conflict with Cortex. In that context, you could reprise classic Crash1 and 2's settings and villains. It would make sense to use a more modern, free-roaming style. I would concentrate on Looney Tunes-esque animation and really addictive action. That's what we did with the original Crash, and there's no reason it couldn't be done today. Given the current Crash games, people forget that he was once cool. Our Crash had a certain whimsical edge to him. Sure, it was goofy – but it wasn't dumb.".[32]

In November 2013, rumours began circulating that Sony bought the rights to the franchise from Activision.[33] Speculations have been fueled after the release of PlayStation 4's #4ThePlayers campaign, featuring a road sign of a bandicoot, with an arrow pointing towards the orange diamond logo of Sony Computer Entertainment.[34][35] It was also noted by publications such as IGN that Crash had been removed from Activision's official website,[36] which would seem to add further credibility to the rumor. However, shortly after, an Activision representative told Game Informer that "[Activision still owns] Crash Bandicoot and we continue to explore ways in which we could bring the beloved series to life".[37]

In July 2014, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House revealed that reviving the Crash Bandicoot series is something that they have been thinking about, saying "It's never off the table.", and Naughty Dog also revealed through an IGN interview the possibility that they may revive both the Crash Bandicoot series and the Jak & Daxter series.[38]

Activision sucks ass. That is all.

Its still dead.

An appearance on Skylanders is the best to hope for.

Activision doesn't seem to give a crap about Crash, I'm afraid.

A shame really, since the first three Crash games on PS1 were some of my favorite games of all time.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

It's like a glass ceiling is holding Crash back. I wish we could see Rubin make another game

It's dead jim, just like medieval and others from the past but this is more or less Activision being foolish.

I remember how much I had my hopes set on the Transformers game series when they brought otu War for Cybertron, it was a great game and hit with TF fans, it didn't exactly do COD numbers (which Activision was probably going for) but it got enough for a great sequel and from there they somehow fucked all that respect away with a 3rd title that had the War universe mashed in with bayformers unievrse which resulted in High Moon studios having their game series taken from them and passed to some no name studio who ended up using half assed assets from the previous games and a mix of the bayformer movie games, the game just bombed and threw off the fans, I avoided that 3rd title like the plague, shame that High Moon studios was forced to work on a last gen COD port, they had such a good run with TF and the Deadpool game but I can't seem Activision letting them stay around much longer.

I wish Crash would come back but mor or less in his original design, I feel it's not going to happen though.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

I don't think Activision really understands how much potential the franchise has as a whole. I mean it was once the fucking MASCOT of Sony!! That's a huge honor to the franchise and recently the franchise has been left to die in the streets. If they were to release a reboot of Crash I would buy a PS4 in a heartbeat.

He needs to be turned into a furry Nathan Drake, and his game needs to be all realistic and gloomy with lots of cutscenes.

There's only one rule video game mascots have to follow to remain employed: don't mock Mario.

Sorry Crash, but you didn't listen.

I think a new crash would be a bold and awesome move. With mobile games and indie titles being all the rage, some decent support to build a crash game as a larger digital title would be a great idea. They could make it the ultimate mashup of gameplay styles and minigames. From its tunnel platform roots to puzzles, to shmups, to racing, to basically anything and everything.

I see crash as being a great character to mold into that kind of thing, similar to how mario can do almost any game type. Maybe it's too late for Crash to come back, but I think there are enough core gamers in the market to support a title with some scope that Activision could up its PR by overtaking the use of Crash as a mascot. He'd be edgy enough to appeal to a younger audience, especially mixed with gameplay from popular titles tossed in, and the older crowd would rally its coolness on the internet. And yes I'm talking about in full costume for TV commercials and youtube ads. Maybe a getting out of retirement intro with subsequent shenanigans ads messing with people/gamers/other games, etc.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
