Forums - Gaming Discussion - Opinion: 8th generation is the worst generation in video game history

I think the major reason why there is urgency is because this generation is going to probably be a short one. Nintendo's already alluding to their next platform, which will likely release in 2017 at the latest. Sony and Microsoft's hardware will be pretty dated in a year or so (meaning third parties will push for a new platform.) Last generation lasted 7 years just about, and it was alright for the first two years to be slow if the next five or so will be fantastic. This generation seems to be a 5 year interim one, and if it takes 1.5 years for a sizable number of decent games to start releasing then we should expect the overall number of quality games to be less than the 7th generation. I think it is a combination of this and the law of diminishing returns (people don't feel like the new games are that much of an upgrade technology-wise) which make people unsatisfied. As PC gamer, who doesn't really game in generations (I'm still playing games from 2012-2014 that were in my backlog) I don't find this to be a huge issue. I have a huge backlog of games to play, and I don't care about the law of diminishing returns because third parties aren't even using this new hardware to make new experiences, they are just making the same games but with better visuals. I'm not bothered by it though, because the games are still good.

Are those XBO/PS4 "remasters" in the same vein as the Zelda Remasters? If so, then I'm wrong.

Let's take a look at that.

Halo MCC does:
All 4 games remastered with new textures, new models, lighting engine, physics, particle effects, all with the option to switch to the original games mode on the fly, bringing al of the original games maps (and some new ones) back at the same time, maps that could no longer be played since support for the original games online functionality had ceased, integrating deeply an entire community channel and programming, as well as new modes, features and achievements across the board.

GTAV does:
Higher quality textures, geometry, higher keyframed animation and more plentiful AI in the form of cars, pedestrians, better lighting, water and cloud processing, first person view, much improved online mode with additional gameplay modes, greatly improved performance, draw distance and adjusted physics, particle effects and so on.

TLOUR does:
Full 1080p at a fairly stable 60fps, photo mode, well thought out and implamented DS4 integration, original titles DLC included by default (Left Behind singleplayer expansion and Territories / Reclaimed Territories map packs), Commenrary mode and additional difficulties, native remote play capability.

Tomb Raider Definitive addition does:
Included DLC, Entieely new character model, TressFX hair simulation from the PC version, improved character models for all allied/enemy characters, environmental destruction (structures that were static in the pc/ps3/360 versions can now be visible damaged/destroyed), 4x resolution on textures, native 1080p resolution, much higher framerate, Kinect support for voice commands to perform skills, bring up the map, navigate relic menus, switch ammo types, kinect-controlled relic manipulation, same voice controls for ps4, as well as guesture controls for ps camera users, active use of the lightbar to illuminate your play area with a flame effect lighting when carrying a torch in dark areas, use of the ds4 speaker to convey specific sounds to the player, support for sensing remote play and enabling touch support actively when playing via remote play on vita.

Metro Redux:
Ranger mode, new lighting and physics engine, advanged enemy ai, improved combat and stealth mechanics, better weapon handling, dynamic weather, new animation sets and detailing for characters, higher level of dynamic destruction on environments, improved smoke, fire and particle effects, new melee animations, survival play, spartan play, all previous dlc for both games included.

But hey, if "just upressed" is what you want to believe, don't let me stop you.

People like to conveniently ignore the more intricate changes made to these games when arguing the toss over "urgh just remakes", the simple truth is that many of them add a lot to improve the originals and provide good value for both first time players and repeat buyers, my point isnt to say "zelda remasters suck", just that, "nintendo remasters games too", in both cases, nintendo and xb/ps, the remasters can be great.

Just tired of people writing them off as nothing more than "upressed" cashgrabs.

So, with the exception of MCC, the other don't have any significant improvement. But hey! Let me send a letter to Nintendo and ask for release the same library than the Wii but now in HD, for the next gen let's add the DLC and some textures, for the next machine let's add maybe a better AI.

There's nothing in that comments that justify the "remasters", except MCC.

And before you go further, yes, OoT3D, MM3D and TWWHD adds also many things, but at least those are old games. Still, I have complained before because I want new games and I'm getting tired of seeing Ocarina of Time port in every Nintendo machine.

Is the eight generation not that enticing right now? I agree.

Is it the worst generation in video game history? Hell no. It hasn't even finished, and it is already better than some other generations.

The sales for these titles justify them, and thats why theyre made.

It's a business after all.

Also, feel free to list these changes in OoT3D, MM3D and TWWHD that are so substantially different than what i listed.
And as I stated, there is no difference between a remaster of a last gen game and a remaster of a 2-3gen old game, it's still taking an existing game and selling it again.

The gen has barely started. It's not like Gen 7 started off with a great library exactly.

1 year and a half into this gen as produce way less games than the 8+ years of last gen and the multiple years from previous gens, I am shocked!!! Why won't game developers release all their games in the first year whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!! Last gen we had gears of war 1-3, god of war 3, halo 3 - reach- odst- 4,mario galaxy 1 and 2, new super mario wii, smash brawl, Donkey Kong Country Returns, mario kart, uncharted 1-3, call of duty 4-12, assassins creed 1-4, red dead redemption, gta IV-V and so on in the same year right?

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Suuuuure.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Better graphics, textures, estable fps, interface changes (touchscreen and motion controls), tweaked boss battles and bomber's notebook, hero mode (diificulty) added, two games in one (OoT + Master Quest) revamped difficulty and mirror mode.

You seriously can't be comparing both. The idea behind a remaster/remake is to make an old game playable to today standars. Not to grab the game released last year and improve to a "new game" that should have been the one since release. That's just a cash in in the same vein that TWWHD was, that ALBW is way too similar to ALTTP, that Majora's Mask is dissapointing and Ocarina of Time can be played in every Nintendo machine.

So I'll say once again, with the exception of MCC, nothing justify those "remasters" that are just upres ports. And you can add the recent announced GOWIII.

I don't agree. I've had more fun with the 8th gen than any other (granted, I haven't fully experienced past gens, but still). The Wii U and 3DS alone have given me endless amounts of enjoyment and I plan on getting a PS4 after there's a price cut.

I think we could all do with some positivity.

That's exactly how I feel. I'm really enjoying this gen and it isn't even close to being done yet. We still have a lot of great games to come.

So, basically the same changes made to many of the games listed for XB/PS4 then?

"better graphics"
"stable framerates"
"new textures"
"interface changes"
"Tweaked gameplay"
"New difficulties"

Those are virtually all the same changes for the games I listed, too, yet somehow theyre magically different when it's zelda? come on.

And I hate to break it to you, but aster quest isnt a whole new game, its just a port of a previously release game mode, if that counts as "two games in one" then games with multiple difficulties count as multiple games in one, and games with randomly generated or procedural levels are infinite in one.

Basically, you are saying Zelda remasters are different then stating the exact same changers that were made in the games I listed, as if theyre somehow different.

They aren't.
