Forums - Gaming - Give your reason as to why remasters are good/bad

(imo) There are two reasons to remake a game:
1. The game is unable to be purchased elsewhere:
ex. Grim Fandango, Homeworld, Xenoblade Chronicles
2. The game is significantly dated or has fixable flaws:
ex. Wind Waker, Homeworld, Phantom Dust, Ocarina of Time

I think Remasters should justify their existance, and the reasons provided by sundin13 sound fine for me. I don't mind remasters as a concept, but as usual publishers are starting to abuse the idea and instead of offering very old games with a lot of improvements or updates (AKA Ducktales, Majora's Mask, Homeworld) they are just polishing minor stuff in very recent games and releasing them again for almos full price.

Why not just call it a port? Yes, they are porting their old game to the new hardware but don't tell me is a remaster because you improve the resolution and the framerate. Basically they are taking advantage of the lack of backwards compatibility to charge extra for very little.

Good if it's a game I want.

Bad and will hinder newer projects if it's a game I don't want.

.- -... -.-. -..

Good-
When a game is older than 2 gens it allows new players to experience it.

Bad-
When a game is only 1 gen old and is still readily available then there is no reason to remaster it. The original still plays fine.
I dont get new consoles to play the same games.

Hell divers got a 9 from IGN. If you're so dismissive of where the industry is headed, just buy the annual releases of cod and sub annual halo/forza/fallout whatever and be happy. You're the kind of guy that wants new games, but dismissive of new games because of their scope. If you want new IP's like bloodborne, these are the devs of tomorrow that could be the ones that make that. Look at Joe danger to no mans sky. Same dev, was successful with joe, and can make a game 1000x's larger in scope. You really have no ground to complain about remasters when you dismiss new ip's like 'meh'

Nevertheless, sony are making new IP's. Not system sellers, but God of War will sell systems and encourage more people to buy some of these 'shitty indie games' which will only be better for us in years 4/5/6

Ok. What indie developers from last gen are now making big games like Bloodborne?

Hello games. Q games. Irongalaxy studios.

to name a few.

None of them really fits the description. Looked up Q Games and Irongalaxy Studios. They seem to still be doing what theyve always been doing.

We dont know how No Mans Sky will turn out yet, so Ill have to wait and see.

I don't really understand why anyone would be against them. They're quick, cheap, often just outsourced and generate easy revenue for future titles. If all the remastered titles disappeared we wouldn't suddenly have more new games. People would just have less choice.

I can understand people being dissapointed by the lack of quality next gen only releases (relative to last gen), but that has little to do with remasters.

Not every indie wants to create 3d-world generated games. Plus interesting to see you judge 'big games' as those in a three dimensional environment rather than gameplay objectives.

How? If it wasnt for the remasters, the console makers would have to do something else. Meaning they would work on new titles.

I don't care either way honestly. If I don't like it, or have already played it, I don't have to buy it. They don't take much time to make either.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Remasters are good because they look better, they allow new adopters to play older releases and they make profits and technical refinements for devs which directly benefits future projects.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine
