Forums - Nintendo - Iwata: Development Of Smart Device Games Will Be Done Primarily By Nintendo

I don't think the issue is so much about resources as it is one of focus.

What happens if mobile becomes 40% of Nintendo's revenue? 50%? 60%?

It's quite possible NX may continue the decline on Nintendo hardware, dedicated handhelds are declining and Nintendo's show they can't sell consoles for sh*t unless they have a gimmick sales craze to tack onto it and who knows if they'll ever come up with that again.

And when mobile becomes a bigger and bigger part of their business, it will have to command more resources and focus on Nintendo's part.

That's more of where I kind of worry. I can easily see this happening too. Nintendo IP could very easily take off like wildfire on mobile, whereas the dedicated platforms could continue to be a sluggish go.

Nintendo is almost "using" the mobile space now to gain more visibility, esp. from the kids audience.   I think you can begin to worry, if the success of this venture doesn't lead to motiving those consumers toward seeking out & buying other Ninty product (HW).

IMO the simpler, mobile gaming experience is replacing the old formula (HH), while the NX will be the  graduation product.  NX will be the new NES or rebirth of their core focus.

The problem with that is the role of the "core console" is already occupied. Sony has taken it and it doesn't look like to me they have any intention of ever giving that back to Nintendo (not unless there's some new disc media format that causes PS5 to be $700 at launch).

Even the "secondary" console spot is now occupied by Microsoft who have endless resources.

I think NX will do OK, but I don't think it will be some miracle seller. Not unless Nintendo has some kind of new gimmick that seriously drives hardware sales.

It's very possible in time that their smartphone revenue will start to inch past and then even overtake their dedicated hardware segment. If Mario Kart was available today on iOS/Android, it would have 20+ million users within 4 weeks alone, I'd pretty much gauruntee it.

Ugh. I'm all for this whole move, but the idea of Nintendo's already-spread-thin production teams devoting time to smartphone games and reducing the output of full games even further is just dreadful.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo hires (or already hired) dedicated personnel to produce those smartphone games.

Besides, I could swear I've read several times across the last 2 years that Nintendo was hiring additional programmers and the like, so they probably even have more personnel to make games than they had even just  year ago.

i supose their mobile games will also run on NX, right?

I would imagine so. Don't see any reason for that to not happen. I wouldn't mind being able to play some of their smartphone games with physical controls (if possible) either.

And probally the Wii U also, considering that they will probally use the web framework which is HTML5 based.

So i don't have to buy ninty consoles to play their games? I hope they make a pokemon game 4 smart phones

You'll still need 1. The phone games will be small spin offs type of  games, maybe companion games and apps to the 'main' games.

The main titles will remain handheld/console exclusive for sure, they're not abandoning their dedicated gaming system.

Expect Pokemon shuffle, no 'true' pokemon game

NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii, WiiU, GB, GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS, Mega Drive, Game Gear, PS1, PS2, PSP, XBOX 360, Atari Lynx

So, where are the people who were claiming that DeNa will be doing the development and Nintendo would just be lending their IPs?

Good. Not saying that other publishers would do terribly with Nintendo's IPs, but, ya know..........this is what Philips did to Zelda so

Hey, don't be so quick to slam the CD-i games, they have lead to some amazing videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKywK-RtY9U

You don't know that. For all we know the main Pokemon games can a home on smartphones. It's not a game get requires intricate controls.

Well at least Nintendo's intention on HW focus is clear, they didn't have mention NX but did so to remove all doubt.

As far as core being occupied, we have yet to see how a "Fusion" console would be received on the market. Combining key software with flexible options in form factor,  has huge potential.  Can't forget, Ninty's mobile presence now gives them an early edge to MS/Sony.  Even though PSXB seem cool now, it really is an adult machine.  NX wiill aim mainly at pre-teens and keep the older fans happy with a SW rich product that does not have a childish, toy image. Nintendo has maintained a neutral look since Wii afterall.

The key for Ninty is to understand how to make the transition from  HH (or mobile now) to core NX.  Capture the hearts of the youngins early with those simple, mobile games, and make sure they want an NX in a few yrs.  It starts now.

You can play Pokemon TCGO (tho technically not a nintendo game) without a Nintendo console, in fact, it's only available for non-ninty OS and hardware.
