Even the "secondary" console spot is now occupied by Microsoft who have endless resources. I think NX will do OK, but I don't think it will be some miracle seller. Not unless Nintendo has some kind of new gimmick that seriously drives hardware sales. It's very possible in time that their smartphone revenue will start to inch past and then even overtake their dedicated hardware segment. If Mario Kart was available today on iOS/Android, it would have 20+ million users within 4 weeks alone, I'd pretty much gauruntee it. |
Well at least Nintendo's intention on HW focus is clear, they didn't have mention NX but did so to remove all doubt.
As far as core being occupied, we have yet to see how a "Fusion" console would be received on the market. Combining key software with flexible options in form factor, has huge potential. Can't forget, Ninty's mobile presence now gives them an early edge to MS/Sony. Even though PSXB seem cool now, it really is an adult machine. NX wiill aim mainly at pre-teens and keep the older fans happy with a SW rich product that does not have a childish, toy image. Nintendo has maintained a neutral look since Wii afterall.
The key for Ninty is to understand how to make the transition from HH (or mobile now) to core NX. Capture the hearts of the youngins early with those simple, mobile games, and make sure they want an NX in a few yrs. It starts now.
