If the NX game platform is in fact the Fusion Console/Handheld then the new system actually frees up developer resources, because Nintendo won't have to port games between either platform. For games like Mario Kart, Smash and any others that would have been made on an indvidual case basis Nintendo and any of their partners only have to make one game, it would nigh on automatically transfer between both platforms, with some basic optimizations and scaling back of features making it work for the handheld.
Freeing up resources means Nintendo could make handheld and PC games if they want to get into developing games for those areas of the market.
The home console will get more games if Fusion is a thing, depending on the kind of controller the home console has it could run any of the handheld games and likewise for the design of the handheld sharing games that would traditionally be made for the console. Considering the level of output on 3DS games vs Wii U, the latter would be swimming in games within the 1st year of release if Nintendo had been able to choose that kind of an approach.
The Fusion platform also means Nintendo can essentially have one marketing campaign, for 2 platforms. Provided they clearly define that they're selling 2 systems, but that games will work across both of them, people can just take or leave which system they like or they can buy both, if Nintendo decides to bundle the systems together in one box for a reasonable price. There may even be benefits to this, like a similar crossplay to local multiplayer, only using the Handheld away from home. All Fusion handheld and home console gamers could play together.
Basically it's all a plus for Nintendo and a very clever idea, would definitely make Nintendo stand out and I'm sure their target audience would love the idea. The only issue I can see is whether Nintendo can do this and get the 3rd party audience back, maybe this will push them further away from those publishers, besides the ones that Nintendo pays to develop exclusives for their platforms.

Those are not pillars... Also I think it should be noted that although we Westerners are looking at this like N "Ecks", in Japan they are likely calling it N "Cross." As in Nintendo Cross. |
N Cross? This definitely sounds like a Fusion machine.

i am sure it's a new application like steam, apple store or Google play, or............maybe........Nintendo streaming service like PS Now and Xbox One on Windows on their platform or several exclusives mobile phones or services.

What else could the 'X' mean? It's not a Roman Numeral, as this could in no way be considered their tenth platform of any kind.
Again, this line strikes me as the most important part here: "a new multi-device membership service." Membership does not imply a fee. This could be -- and I think it probably is -- the Club Nintendo replacement. It will unite all devices supported with Nintendo software -- 3DS, Wii U, "NX", and Mobage (the platform owned by DeNA). Pure speculation of course, but I think this could be the meaning of the "X." That the NX is somehow the bridge between these platforms.

Probably the follow-up to the Wii U. Seriously I can see a successor in early to mid 2017 especially because Wii U sales have been very low in general and third party support is basically non-existent.

I think people are looking into this too much, it's useless to speculate on a single letter codename. It does not imply a fusion machine it doesn't not-imply one either. X is used as a codename for many many projects.
I hope it's pronounced "N-10". And then the one could be called "N-10-2" which sounds just like "Nintendo"! Or... "Intend To".
:(

In Japan the letter X is pronounced "cross" and it has different connotations from here in the West, where it is mostly considered the go-to representation of a variable. I don't know whether that is also the case in Japan, but the use of the letter as "cross" is certainly worth mentioning when that is virtually the only shadow of a hint we have to go on.
