Forums - Nintendo - Does Nintendo actually think deeply about product names?

?

Yes, they think deeply about it 25 34.72%

No, they don't, at all, ever 47 65.28%

Total:72

Of course they do. They're a multibillion dollar company.

Doesn't make their names less stupid.

I'm not entirely sure how much a name really means lately. Back in the day, it seemed to have more influence, now it's about carrying on the legacy of something, like why we have playstation 4, Xbox, and even Wii. I personally found it far more interesting when Sega was in the mix with their naming schemes, although, at least for me, it never urged me to buy one thing over another.
I would love to see these companies come up with new names, it often seems that Nintendo's code names are better than what they are eventually released as. Ultra 64, project Dolphin, the revolution.
But no, now it's about legacy, like I said, instead of coming up with new ideas.
To the OP, I'm sure Nintendo puts lots of thought into it, and in the case of the Wii U, it makes lots of sense that they chose that naming scheme, continuing after their most successful console, I'm quite sure there will be an entirely new name for the next one. Maybe something like the Nintendo Eclipse. Or Elysian.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

How much thinking could it have taken for some of the names they've come up with?

Lol at this. Yes. Not long at all. Adding 'U' to the end of Wii didn't take thousands of man hours.

Too deep

No. The Nintendo 64... played 64 bit games so therefore they called it a Nintendo 64. The DS, a Duel Screen so it is a DS. the 3DS, a duel screen in 3D, so it is a 3DS. The gamecube, it plays games and is in the chape of a cube to the gamecube. The Wii..... this one I thing is the most imaginative, maybe the gameboy. The Wii U, The Wii was successful so they thought they could ride that success. The NES, it entertained people and was from Nintendo so the Nintendo Entrainment system. The Super Nintendo, it was better than the NES so it was Super compared to it to the Super Nintendo. The Gameboy colour... it was a Gameboy that was in colour so the Gameboy Colour. The Gameboy Advanced.... it was the next in the generation so it was "advanced compared to the other two so it was the gameboy advanced.  The New 3DS, it's new so therefore the New 3DS.

Conclusion - Nintendo is sloppy when it comes to thinking of names.

Yeah, they think about naming their consoles too intensely that that mess it up D:

Without evidence to the contrary, I see no reason to think him lying or wrong, though it would be pretty interesting to hear the story of how Nintendo came up with the names and the possible alternatives.

I think that they just go with whatever name that sounds fun to them. The wii u name was not well thought out. If a company has to explain the name of a product or what it is then I doubt that the product will sell well.

Yes. Often times bad decisions stem from over thinking things.

Just because you've put a lot of thought into something doesn't seem your decision is going to be good, often times it can mean the opposite.

At the end of the day all three consoles have terrible names ... Wii, XBox One (really? wasn't there already a XBox 1? And XBox One is better than an XBox 360?), and Playstation (Fisher Price Play Station ... sounds pretty much like a child's toy doesn't it?).

Even DS is about as bland of a name as you can get.

playstation may not sounds cool or you may not like it but it does the work fine, you know what you are getting without any doubt of confusion.

they might have overdone it a few times like those 'New' 3Ds and Wii U. and even color design on the game cube. plus those crazy controllers not sure why from a good SNES button layout and until now the primary layout of XBOX and PS.
