Does Nintendo actually think deeply about product names?

Just because you've put a lot of thought into something doesn't seem your decision is going to be good, often times it can mean the opposite.

At the end of the day all three consoles have terrible names ... Wii, XBox One (really? wasn't there already a XBox 1? And XBox One is better than an XBox 360?), and Playstation (Fisher Price Play Station ... sounds pretty much like a child's toy doesn't it?). 

Even DS is about as bland of a name as you can get. 

playstation may not sounds cool or you may not like it but it does the work fine, you know what you are getting without any doubt of confusion.
