Forums - Gaming - Open-World games are taking over the industry, but do you like this trend?

?

Yes 71 34.80%

No 86 42.16%

Maybe 47 23.04%

Total:204

Don't really like the trend...I'd much prefer a tighter experience in most games. Playing Far Cry 3 just annoyed me with the amount of problems that game had with spreading itself too thin.

This gen will be the golden age of open world games.
We already have:
Watch Dogs
Far Cry 4
AC Black Flag and Unity
GTA V
Shadow of Mordor
Forza Horizon 2
The Crew
etc.
This year will be even better
Zelda U
Metal Gear Solid 5 PP
XCX
Batman Arkham Knight
Dying Light
AC Victory
No Man's Sky
That right there 2015 open world lineup looks impressive
and who knows ES6 or Fallout 4 could come this year as well.
The Age of Open World Games is upon us
and I embrace it fully.

In general, no. It leads to lazy or sloppy level design too often for me as developers have to anticipate player coming from so many directions. They also tend to pad open worlds with collectibles that I just give up on 20% or so in.

I will say some series it can work I enjoy them, for example Infamous: Second Son did a great job opening the world and amount of collectibles I actually 100% on.

I dont think it will take over. If you take out GTA5 numbers then it really isnt all that impressive and they only make 2 of those per gen. And it takes longer to make those kinds of games.

The numbers for Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed: Unity and Rogue are impressive surely, as is the numbers for Far Cry 4.

As long as it makes sense for the game and developers don't do it just to follow a trend.

I'm actually very happy with the trend, underlying the fact that they're open world they tend to cover quite different bases gameplay wise between RPG, Action and shooting. The alternative to liking this would be prerfering that the MAJORITY of games were linear. I think most developers are managing a good job of offering the best of both worlds in overwhelming open experiences. Can't remember the last time I thought "Damn, I wish this game was more linear".

My only knack is that there is still a lack of Adventure games, platformers and imaginative RPGs (not just generic medevil fantasy). But that has little to do with the Open world trend as many platformers and such would fit into this sandbox category anyway. Oh my other annoyance is developers pushing scale over quality of content but again that isn't fault of games being open world.

that they are. But they arent really that much different from the popular FPS games. Hell none of those you listed come close to COD numbers

not really. dont get me wrong, i love open world games. RDR, infamous, GTA, Farcry are all fantastic games. but i dont want this to become the overwhelming majority. i like linear action games as well. thank god for uncharted.

Yeah last gen was the gen of the coridor shooter and this gen will be the gen of the massive open worlds.  Now this is because these new open world games really weren't possible on last gen hardware.

However I wish we could just get a fair amount of games from every genre.

agreed. i dont want empty open worlds or open world just for the sake of it. if your gonna do it do it right. dont get me wrong, i will play every open world game if it interests me, but i just wish for more linear action games like uncharted and GoW to be out there because i enjoy them a lot.

They are? The only open world games from MS, Sony and Nintendo I can think of is Infamous and ZeldaU...
