I'm actually very happy with the trend, underlying the fact that they're open world they tend to cover quite different bases gameplay wise between RPG, Action and shooting. The alternative to liking this would be prerfering that the MAJORITY of games were linear. I think most developers are managing a good job of offering the best of both worlds in overwhelming open experiences. Can't remember the last time I thought "Damn, I wish this game was more linear".

My only knack is that there is still a lack of Adventure games, platformers and imaginative RPGs (not just generic medevil fantasy). But that has little to do with the Open world trend as many platformers and such would fit into this sandbox category anyway. Oh my other annoyance is developers pushing scale over quality of content but again that isn't fault of games being open world.
