The general user of this site seems to still think that FPS is the biggest genre in gaming. I agree, but I think open-world games are taking over now. now, and this was clear to anyone who saw the sales of last year's games.

Watch Dogs has sold 10 million units, Assassin's Creed Unity and Rogue sold 10 million units, Far Cry 4 sold 5.90 million units and a port of GTA V on current-gen consoles has sold 8.48 million units at retail. Yes, the best-selling FPS game of last year, COD: AW and Destiny sold more. But overall open-world games sold more than FPS games last year, and hence became the best-selling genre of games last year. But do you like this trend? Do you like or dislike the possibility of FPS genre being dethroned? Post here why or why not you like this, because it is going to happen soon.

not really. dont get me wrong, i love open world games. RDR, infamous, GTA, Farcry are all fantastic games. but i dont want this to become the overwhelming majority. i like linear action games as well. thank god for uncharted.

I have no problem with having open worlds in games, I just hate games that describe themselves as an open world game such as GTA. They are usually boring and try to do way too much without making anything all that interesting.

Open world isn't a genre, its a design choice. And its arguably one of the best design choices to hit the mass market in recent years.

Yes, open world games are here to stay and I'm cool with that.

But it discribes itself as a sandbox game more often. I'm sure that the majority or people liken it more to that.

Open world isn't a genre, just like linear isn't a genre. But yeah, I'm fine with more games being open world. In fact, it's about time. So many of them were born with the intent of being open, but couldn't due to limited hardware. Glad that's no longer an issue.

As long as there are enough things in the open world, I'm fine with that. Besides, it's a nice change of pace from the linear shooters trend the industry follows since 2007.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
