Lao just looks like Dunban, but they aren't making him out to be a mentor at all the way Elma is. His role in the character dynamics seem to be much closer to like Kallian or something.

Also, from what we've seen, Elma is nothing like Kos Mos.

With the Kos-Mos comparison, I was just trying to find an epic Xenosaga character that wasn't Jin lol. 

Lao's description says he's on par with Elma, so there's that.

Maybe I read this wrong, but I was under the impression that Lao only served under Elma, and that the wording says that his skills have merely been "noticed" by Elma, meaning that there is a class difference. Also, even if he didn't serve under her, his friend Doug did, and they are implied to be ranked similarly.

EDIT: So I read it again. He was ranked under her before the attack, but now they are implied to be of the same rank, along with Doug and Irina. So that "noticed" line likely means that she promoted him herself. So even if they are "officially" ranked the same, there's obviously a difference in the flow of respect. Just like how Shulk is more powerful than Dunban and now the leader of the group, yet Shulk still treats Dunban like the leader.

But none of that really matters because none of that has anything to do with being a mentor to the main character, which Lao has so far shown no signs of doing, where as Elma has constantly been doing it.

I feel like everyone wants Elma to be the Fiora or something, but to me, it's become more and more obvious that she's a lady Dunban. She guides the PC in the beginning until they become the hero and surpasses her. It also makes sense since this means she doesn't have to be scripted as the love intrest, which is good because character customization makes that extremely complicated.

I remember one of the characters being described along the lines of "Even Elma sees this one as a rival" Or something. Could be wrong, and it could be a different person entirely, but this has been based off that.

Haha nobody knows Xenosaga and yet everyone knows Xenoblade despite it selling worse.

Well Xenoblade sold better than episode 2 and 3. And Jin only appeared in those two, so it's understandable.
