Why? Both average at about 20-22k weekly including launches and holiday sales, and here are the last six weeks of PS4 vs. Wii U sales that Vgchartz has.

Wii U                  PS4

46,565                  31,966

36,585                 39,240

12,054                 18,055

9,405                  14,314

7,321                   12,526

6,817                  15,856

AVG               AVG

19,791          21,992

And the lifetime averages

PS4

1,052,863/49 = 21,487

Wii U

2,206,968/(104 +3 +4) = 19,882

The Wii U sold 1,579,424 by the end of 2013 (a month and a half before the PS4 released.) That would take 73 weeks for the PS4 to catch up, after a discontinued Wii U, if they both remain the same in Japan on average for their lifetimes (PS4 only gains 52k per year over Wii U with its current sales so subtract that from how many years you think they'll be on the market together to get the real number of weeks.)

So the PS4 must sell at about 20k per week in Japan a year or so after the Wii U is discontinued entirely there.

Overall their sales are comparable and the PS4 needs to catch up to Wii U for Wii U's head start. The only way it can do that is if it either lives much longer than Wii U in Japan, which is possible but not super likely, or it gets a game which will boost its sales dramatically (main series Dragon Quest.)

Otherwise, anything goes.

Let's not forget it has to outsell wii u consistently, something that won't happen due to wii u's releases, pricecuts, bundles and holidays.

If I had to guess you also expected WiiU to keep outselling X1 and that MK8 + SSBU would make Nintendo skyrocket.

The Wii and Wii U are very different, but it's not like the Wii didn't have the hardcore Nintendo fans, i.e. the people who currently own the Wii U. Wii just had the Nintendo audience + casual gamers who wanted motion controls. Wii U will have a nice attach rate, but let's not forget that doesn't mean much if games are few and far between.

Most hardcore fans didn't play on the Wii due to its motions controls. It was Nintendo's gamble to get all the casuals and not focus nearly as much as maybe they did with the Gamecube, with powerful (at the time for consoles) hardware and a 'traditional' controller, and is why the Wii U isn't getting the sales it should get, think about it, if all the gamecube and n64 fans were still hardcore Nintendo fans, the Wii U wouldn't be doing the low numbers it is right now. But i agree that those games are far between, but not as far as you think they are for this year.

Please, stop this. it looks like you're making it up as you write.

I think a few things could lead to Wii U being more successful.
1.) Dragon Quest XI being shared between 3DS/Wii U like DQX (assuming this is a more traditional game).
2.) Pokken Tournament being a huge success.
3.) Youkai Watch for Wii U
4.) Another Monster Hunter
5.) Xenoblade being a huge success in Japan

I think it's more safe to assume PS4 will win though.

1.) I doubt this after Dragon Quest Heroes. Square Enix should know now where this series belong to
2.) Could be true but it won't be such a huge success how you think
3.) Not going to happen since we know Level 5 is working on a PS4 project
4.) Monster Hunter belongs to handhelds Monster Hunter Tri showed us that
5.) Will definitely boost sales but it is not Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest so it won't save the Wii U in Japan

Since dragon quest sold equal to or better on nintendo platforms, square should know that multiplatform nintendo/sony is the better idea.

PS4 should match PS3 sales, the games are coming and in all likelihood as is DQ and Monster Hunter. PS4 will sale more then double.

No chance that PS4 will match PS3 sales in Japan, after 1st year have only 1.143k.

PS4 will sell more than Wii U, it will have longer life.

Still too early to judge if it going to sell as much as ps3 or not

First 52 Week Sales:
3DS 5,075,956
GBA 4,916,845
PS2 4,242,257
Wii 3,844,356
DS 3,651,082
PSP 2,220,528
GC 1,545,681
PS3 1,273,555
Wii U 1,200,339
DC 1,104,177
PS4 1,049,426
Vita 1,026,491

PS4 was selling belowvita before now it's ahead and ps4 is only 224k behind ps3

Oh, if you add 5 weeks to that chart, wii u is at 1.5 million, increasing the gap.

i can't imagine someone joining because of the Wii's motion controls.

Well, I was mainly a PS1/PS2 gamer before the Wii. The Wii was the console I played the most in the 7th generation. Why? Mostly because I enjoyed motion controls. I'm sure many other Nintendo fans on this site would agree with this sentiment.

Of course. Motion controls were a dream come true for hardcore gamers, especially those who grew in the 90's.

I cant believe some people still doubt DQXI will be a PS4 exclusive, for us at least, dragon quest heroes shows their will to export DQ and the best way to do that is on PS4, its coming to PS4 , likely only PS4, you need to accept it guys

Its like the people who think PS4 wont outsell WiiU, just like those who thought that about X1

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

3DS?

Nop, its confirmed by the producer it will be on big screen with visuals like the CGI from DQH, such things are impossible on 3DS

No it was confirmed that Horii wants to play it on the big screen. Which, if anything, implies a console port of the handheld game. Where did you see anything about the game looking like CGI in DQH (by the way such a thing is impossible on the PS4 as well. ;) )

When the topic of Dragon Quest‘s future came up, Horii said development of Dragon Quest XI is advancing towards the series’ 30th anniversary, which is in 2016. He also said he wants to play it on a big screen, suggesting the game is in development for console (rather than smartphones). A specific platform was not revealed.

I can't believe some people still doubt DQXI will be a 3DS/Wii U multiplatform game, for U.S at least, Dragon Quest X (and IX) shows their willingness to release a numbered DQ on Nintendo platforms, best way to do that is to release the game on both Wii U and 3DS, it's coming to the WIi U/3DS, likely both of them, you need to accept it Aerys.

Its like the people who think Vita or PS4 will get a main series Monster Hunter game, just like those who thought DQX would release for PS3 as an exclusive.
