Forums - Sales - is it safe to say that VGC tracking is now totally irrelevant?

I remember a time when updates came almost punctually the Thursday after the previous week. Good times.

I'd rather have regular made up numbers that get big adjustments each week than slightly more accurate numbers a month after.

Yeah, makes sense.  Make your website's sole purpose irrelevant, because you can't handle complaints on a message board.  That's an entirely legit thing to do heh.

But a significant amount of people bitch about it every fucking time with often times no basis. Lots of the time, it's just "a feeling". You're on a sales website to discuss the sales of each console/game. Not the inaccuracy of the numbers on the site.

So what?  You're telling me that after 10 years, and 520 weeks in the industry, IoI hasn't gotten used to the fact that people will critique the numbers?  I mean, shouldn't that be something you get accustomed to after...maybe, I don't know, year 2?

That aside, it's not up to you to determine what is and isn't fair game for discussion with regards to sales estimates (Mods, or IoI himself will tell us if we're approaching a no-no topic).  Additionally, when certain trends are set for months on end, and the numbers still don't bear out those trends, critique is certainly expected, if not warranted.  Are some people a bit too emotional about it?  Sure.  But, welcome to the internet.  If you haven't figured out how to ignore the overly emotional, then you're doing it wrong.

It should also be noted, that some of the complaints are rather valid.  I mean, even if a bit misinformed.  The discrepancy between IoI's numbers, and Sony's sold to consumers statement, is indicative of that.  Yes, most of us who cared enough to ask, know that it was because the report on those numbers, lacked the itemization IoI needed to break things down.  However, I consider no numbers at all, a better alternative to putting up knowingly false numbers, simply because you lack the itemization needed (Which may, in fact, be why numbers take longer these days).

I think it's quite useful. It gives us at least a general idea of how the consoles are selling. Isn't the website being updated as well? That probably takes a lot of time away from gathering and updating numbers.

Well, I just hope it goes back to normal soon

Even if they're poor predictors, they make for a good reference (once adjusted).

The focus of the site is shifting. ioi makes money from this site. To make money he needs traffic. To get traffic he relied on people coming here to check out the data.

Now that the site has a massive community and releases a lot more gaming news, traffic is coming in other ways and now. It doesn't matter as much about the figures (although they do still matter).

Numbers are always a rough estimate, more frequent updates would be nice but they still come out eventually..

I think it is more irrelevant due to Digital sales.

yeah, i myself had lots of retail games last gen, and all digital in this gen so far. deals are getting better n better.
i came to this site to see HW sales, so those are more meaningful to me. but game retail sales numbers are also very interesting.

Proudest Platinums - BF: Bad Company, Killzone 2 , Battlefield 3 and GTA4

i fondly remember when i first found the site in mid 07 i wanted to see ps360 sales found a site called nextgenwars or something had a live counter for its WW sales, some how from that site or just continuing to look for more sales data i found this one

i remember numbers would go up every week think it was every Wednesday the latest was Fridays

i noticed that the numbers would go up later and later starting in 2011 to what we have today being almost a month behind

idk why the owner or whoever is in charge started to delay them but when we would get the numbers early it was very easy for sales analyst like myself to go in the WW threads and own posters for the numbers that would release next week

I used to visit the website just for the numbers. I can leave after a quick glance.

i decided to stay around for the community but I'm sure ioi will have the numbers sorted eventually. No big deal.
