So you mean they are aware of the fact that MM is a harcore game, but not what makes it so? How did that happen?
What I was thinking was, these people are generally those who are not very aware of the intricate details of the games. Rather than knowledge of the game, they more base their purchases on what they see. And what they see is a 3D Zelda game.
For example, FF8 is a love it or hate it type of game. Similar to MM. The reason people dislike it commonly has to do with the Draw system, which could get very tedious. But in spite that, FF8 actually sold more than FF7. And I suspect that has a lot to do with many people not reading the reviews properly and realizing what they were getting into before buying it. Reading rewiews and properly researching games is something more common for core gamers. In this case the core Zelda fans. And those guys know what MM is, and made their decision on whether to buy it or not based on this. As for the rest, most of them probably don't realize how the game's systems work. And since they don't, it shouldn't be something that dissuades them from buying it.

I just think there's certain titles certain people will never pick up. But you're right, this could be a huge hit for Nintendo, since OoT and ALBW both have paved the way for MM. And since MM is launching with new HW it will get a decent boost out of that as well. But looking at statistics, MM shouldn't surpass ALBW - but statistics isn't the end all be all =)
