Forums - Sales Discussion - New Nintendo 3ds XL... selling better than expected?

Seems the launch for both the EU and US were over 150,000 units each. From what I can see from the graph it looks like about 175,000 for the US, 155,000 for Europe. For XL units alone.

http://www.dualshockers.com/2015/02/16/wii-u-software-sales-increased-200-percent-from-last-year-new-3ds-xl-and-amiibo-sales-are-exceptional/

If you are right these numbers are staggering... it's going to be REALLY CLOSE TO Half a Million units... If not more...

Who would have thunk it?

Iwata:
"As you can see here, we also launched special-edition hardware on that day.
I have received reports that pre-orders for this limited-edition hardware went so well that many retailers closed them before the launch date and the hardware almost sold out on the launch date.

Here are our preliminary sales figures for New Nintendo 3DS launched last Friday in each region, and we are comparing the sales for the first two days to those of Nintendo 3DS XL. At the end of last year, some video game enthusiasts, who actively gather information on video games, held off on buying Nintendo 3DS hardware in anticipation of the New Nintendo 3DS launch. Thanks to these consumers and some highly anticipated titles being released simultaneously, we had a good launch despite it not being the usual sales season. Our next challenge is to keep this sales momentum."

They can keep the momentum going with Bravely Second and key releases! lol

So far it's selling well but i don't know how much if we compare to recent sales. We need NPD number

I doubt they will be able to keep momentum but a good launch is a good launch. The Zelda + MH LE bundles and the early adopter gamers look to trade up inflate the number so they won't be able to maintain that.

But like I said I hope it was a bit of a lesson to Nintendo -- launch hardware IMO should target adults. Not kids (like they tried with Wii U). Adults are the bigger part of the enthusiast market, that's the market that's going to show up on day 1 for product launches like this. And that's also why you should be marketing during Walking Dead/Better Call Saul ... not Spongebob and Dora the Explorer.

The people who I saw grabbing Majora's Mask 3D were all 18-30+ year olds who probably played the game years ago on the N64 and are now grown up.

Well no one thought they'd have the start they have now, so even though I agree with you... anything is possible

Almost 100% this is due to Nintendo under stocking their products as usual.

Not often I agree with you when it comes to things Nintendo but I whole heartedly agree with this.

Yes and no. Did they understock the LE NN3DS XLs? Yes. But as for the regular NN3DS XL stock? Not quite. It sold at LEAST 300K since it's NA and Euro release. 300K seems like a fair amount of systems no?
