Nintendo have been outdone by third parties when it comes to Gamepad use.
Games like Rayman Legends, ZombiU, and Deus Ex do more interesting stuff with it than just about anything Nintendo have produced themselves.

NightDragon83 said: Let's be honest... the gamepad is the anchor weighing the Wii U down, and has been since day 1. The Wii U would be at least $100 cheaper without it, and Nintendo probably could've beefed up the hardware a bit more instead and still sold the Wii U for at least $100 less than the PS4/X1. The console has been out over 2 years now and there are no games that justify it as a necessity. Where is "Zelda: Four Swords" for this thing? Not that it would matter since you can't have 4 gamepads connected to one console. Ironically the gamepad's biggest advantage... being able to play games and use apps off-TV screen... has been nullified by the fact that it's essentially tethered to the console itself. You can't use it like a true tablet independent of the console, and you need to be in the same room as the console. The gamepad is an interesting concept, but its forced inclusion and poor execution have basically stunted the Wii U's growth potential this generation. |
There's a lot of flaw in your logic. First off you under the idea that there has to be this super human uses of the pad to justify it. I'll be the first that a traditional controller can do much of what the pad can do. Just the pad makes things easier. Like using the pad to coordinate all 3 characters in Pikmin 3. A glancing down at the pad is no where near as bad as some are trying to make. Plus off screen is not its biggest advantage by a long shot. As for value, thats all relative. Some would say $100 is well worth it if it even cost $100.
It should be possible to unplug it and use the classic controller in any game. Why is it required having a big, heavy and ugly low-resolution tablet which is always on low battery and never really used always connected to the system?
The tablet must get smaller or be completely dropped asap. It is the main reason why so many people and Nintendo fans refuse to buy the Wii-U.
Microsoft at least learned from the Kinect-failure and adopted quickly to the market requirements. As long as Nintendo still refuses to accept the fact that the Wii-U needs a big change, the sales will get lower and lower. Zelda ans Xenoblade will not change anything unless Nintendo begins to learn how the market works and what potential buyers want.
Off tv play is enough. If the gamepad was so useful and innovative they would've done something with it by now. Not sure what nintendo was thinking.
The vita is probably manufactured for only a bit more than $100. There are pretty niffy tablets that are manufactured for $100. Why do people keep saying the Wii u tablet costs $100 or more to manufacture. It doesn't.
On a short Wii U hiatus atm, and during it I'm feeling a little doubtful about the controller.
We've been waiting for its "golden era" of implementation in games, but it seems like it's only getting worse. Off-TV play is 90% of the GamePad...

Heck, there is DS software that handles the second touch screen and comes up with better uses then anything Nintendo has put out.
Which is a shame, especially given the could just mine for ideas from some of the classic DS software that never made it out of that generation or off of portables like the Trauma Center/Team games or concepts like Pokemon Snap or Endless Ocean. If Nintendo of America had the brains or maybe the guts, they are already at work trying to get either Fatal Frame V or a combo pack of V and the Wii remake of II aka Deep Crimson Butterfly ready for a October 2015 release.
