It should be possible to unplug it and use the classic controller in any game. Why is it required having a big, heavy and ugly low-resolution tablet which is always on low battery and never really used always connected to the system?
The tablet must get smaller or be completely dropped asap. It is the main reason why so many people and Nintendo fans refuse to buy the Wii-U.
Microsoft at least learned from the Kinect-failure and adopted quickly to the market requirements. As long as Nintendo still refuses to accept the fact that the Wii-U needs a big change, the sales will get lower and lower. Zelda ans Xenoblade will not change anything unless Nintendo begins to learn how the market works and what potential buyers want.
