Forums - Gaming Discussion - Something's missing this generation...what is it?

New games, new ideas and new experiences. It has almost entirely been the same tired games, but part of it is because when something new does coome out I goes mostly over looked. Loads of amazing new experiences last gen, but so far not as much, only a little bit on the much hated or overlooked Wii U or indie scene. Even there, there seems to be less that is new. Nintendo Land has some great experiences and could cash in on more if they made some DLC for it, make it a great group/party game instead of it only being okay. ZombiU tried something fairly new but again was mostly over looked and had harsh reviews much due to its tough nature and admittedly dated graphics. Wonderful 101 took an new and interesting approach to an action game, but much over looked... those are the best examples I can think of right now. Ryse might be considered in this as well with the slight kinect experience offered, but was a bit flawed since it didn't get speach recognition all that great and didn't utilize much of kinect beyond that.
There was a multitude of new and interesting experiences last gen, but even then many were over looked so the ones that did make it are now unfortunately just more of the same LBP3 for instance.
The only selling feature so far this gen is a slightly superior graphic experience, but there hasn't been too much as far as anything trying to break the mould. Evolve maybe, but it took a terrible turn towards horrid DLC practices...

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Ridge Racer.. Seriously... The start of a gen without a Ridge Racer... It feels strange

i am missing JRPGs getting localized(especially Dragon Quest 7 3D)

not trying to be funny at all, but on the nintendo side for me, i feel like I'm getting everything i SHOULD have gotten from wii, so in that respect I'm enjoying everything they're pushing on 3ds and wii-u, and i think most owners who are giving games a try, such as Wonderful 101, bayonetta, sonic lost world etc are enjoying it too.

As I'm still straddling the fence on getting xb1 or ps4, as it stands now, i haven't seen anything that makes me go i MUST HAVE on of those systems, and mind you i enjoyed my sony consoles as much as the next person. I think the truth is right now 3rd party games haven't hit that "this is epic and fresh" moment yet, and honestly, i dont think Sony and microsoft have either.

But I will say The Order "appears" to be the start of that, then I'm hoping revelations 2 will be. For myself, i will have one of those 2 systems the day Batman releases.

Lack of games. The market became cut-throat with the rush the previous generation did into HD. Many companies went under and the ones we have left are mostly the rehash titles yearly variety.

There are few titles and far between. There are few next-gen exclusives because they are risky. There is less variety because it is risky. Basically, we are driving into a corner and the walls keep getting closer. One day people will get fed up of FPS' and this will all come crashing down.

That's pretty amusing, when you think about it, considering the FPS genre is what pushed gaming popularity so high.  If the technology needed for FPP hadn't come along, we'd still be stuck in a loop of platformers and sidescrollers and gaming would be infinitely more boring and much less wide-spread.  I know my interest in gaming waned considerably with the SNES until I discovered PC gaming (FPP games, in fact, with Daggerfall and Mech Warrior) and then the rise of the JRPG with the PS1.  The idea of more genres being added to the mix being a bad thing is ludicrous to me.

But, yes, there may come a day when competitive online military FPS games become less popular and the industry sheds a lot of casual gamers.  I don't see that causing anything to come crashing down, though, as there are other types of games that are very popular.  Besides, the market always rushes to fill a vacuum.  Resources would be shifted.

As far as things being cut-throat now, the most cut-throat generation gaming has ever seen was the NES era and we survived that, even if many fledgling studios did not.  It's all about adaptability.  The middle died last gen because the internet made information about a game avaliable at the drop of a hat and people stopped paying $60 for average titles when top-of-the-line titles were the exact same price.  Gone are the days when a cool-sounding titles and awesome boxart could push sales.  Thankfully, resonably priced downloadable titles are rising to replace them, many of which are also more creative to boot.

We are not seeing a ton of new IPs. There is no need to when so many franchises were started last gen, i think thats what ms and sony are saying.

Looking through the comments it looks like you guys are lacking a Wii U

I get that feeling too, and it's most likely due to the fact that thus far, this gen has been literally an extension of the previous gen, and not the big leap forward that every other generational change presented to us.

Its like going from an iPhone4 to an iPhone5, rather than an old flip-phone to an iPhone.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Technically an 8th gen launch game, you can count it if you want .

Last gen hasn't died yet, and this one didn't have a big revolution like all the others have.
