IMO, they need to perform all 3 of these options. Add in a trade-in deal, so you can trade a PS2 for a PS3 at 100 dollars off.
But I don't think that's what happening.
There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

Wait, backwards compatibility? So they're gonna release ANOTHER model? :s Yeah that sounds like a smart idea. How many models of the PS3 are out there already, anyway? It's getting way too confusing for consumers, especially if they're to go after the more casual PS2/Wii crowd. Even hardcore gamers can't tell all those different versions apart sometimes.

Wii is getting a lot of sales from a new market... the non-gamers (also called casual, rofl). Mothers, grand-mothers, daddies, grand-daddies, little kids, etc. Look at the Wii comercials, a old dude playing bowling with his grand son? A full family playing tennis? WTF?
Both Wii and 360 are taking PS2 customers, of course they are. But they are taking much less than what we all believe. I think Sony knows this better than us and they want to do something to capture that market pretty soon.
I have no freaking idea what Sony has in mind but last time they did something to improve the PS3 business they introduced the 40Gb and that more than doubled the WW sales. If they manage to double them again we will all be surprised. Just think at this: if Sony properly retires the PS2 they will be selling PS3s to everyone that would be buying the retired PS2 and this alone will almost double the PS3 sales wouldwide.
he is speaking about software compatibilty by firmware update

I don't think a $599 console was released targeting all PS2 owners. Especially when the PS2 was still being fully supported and sold at $149.
The PS3 was launched to target the hardcore PlayStation croud, now it's targetting a more generic gamers/blu-ray croud but when it launched was clearly not.

The "easy" way is to include a firmware update to add software BC. I have no idea how hard that would be though.

lol,may be an echange ps2 for a ps3 plus 5 free ps3 games
haha,i now its reducilious
Well the most likely scenario will be a program where you can trade in your PS2 for a rebate on a PS3. Perhaps to coincide with full software b/c on the 40 GB. Maybe that is a bit optimistic.
