why? PS3/PS4/X1 uses blu-ray disks as well. And nobody has doubts that they can run 50GB disks

Or it can and the devs are just hyping the game's content? |
No the article and various sources will tell you that the max a Wii U optical disc can hold is 25GB.

Those consoles use standard Blu-ray so of course they can be dual layered to reach 50GB. Wii U on the other hand only uses proprietary Blu-Ray and I haven't seen any reports where they will be dual layered.
After reading what people have been saying here, I decided to look up whether the Wii U has anything on dual-layered discs... and they don't. So, while it's possible, chances are they were referring to a 25 GB single-layered disc.

Because we all know that the gaming media are omniscient?
Well yeah, bad title there. Should be "The Wii U disc is so small, Xenoblade almost needed 2 discs."
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Why? I use an USB-stick and it works fine.

Crazy how GameCube discs were only 1.5GB and we refer to 25GB as "so small." I'd use N64 (64MB max) as the reference but the graphics are so vastly under even the GameCube that it isn't a good comparison.

Alright buddy. Let's figure this out by using the article itself.
"To enjoy playing, the enormous seamless map must load quickly (which was achieved through the hard work of our programming division), but we had help from Nintendo proper implementing a further improvement to what we had."
Meaning that nintendo allowed them to use the multi-layered disks.
Now I'm going to use a quote from someone else in this thread.
| Ryudo said: Wii U discs are the same capacity as blu ray 25GB per layer. They could go dual layer but would make things hiccup more from reading off disc so easier to read from the console for less hitches while playing. |
Meaning that the reason they wouldn't allow it in the first place is to avoid things like this.
Now take a look at an interview later on.
"I recommend playing the downloadable version so you don’t have to worry about loading from the disk."

That doesn't sound like Nintendo offered multi-layered discs. It sounds more like they used their art of compression to fit it onto one disc.
PS3 had games that utilized the 50GB dual layered disc without a hitch. It will be the same with PS4 and X1.
Nintendo doesn't offer the option because they don't think any of their games will require it. I'm sure this may change, but as of right now Wii U is locked to 25GB. That and they don't have the luxury of installing large amounts of data to the flash memory since every Wii U game must also run on the lowest denominator of the 8GB model.
