Forums - Sony - Should we be worried about SOE being sold?

If you're worried after this sale, then be worried about Sony's financials in general. This sale doesn't mean all that much to them right now. They'll miss some revenue in the future, but there's no telling whether their financial issues were hampering SOE or not anyway. The returns their future games bring now, might not be the same as they would have been with Sony (ignoring the obvious potential added Xbone revenue).

Or/instead increased the cmos production capacity by 20,000 units more a month /plant

Which many smartphone and tablet and HDR cameras that use these Sony made sensors inside the hardware they sell. @ almost $18.00 /sensor sample even with reduction for mass order, every 3 month Apple and Samsung will be ordering a ton of those sensors to put in their devices. And Sony may be looking at this as better returns over the returns that may or may not happen for such software esp. When under Sony it was all free 2 play. And the fact it going to another company means that Sony does not have the overhead to deal with for a Mainly only "Pc development" studio and instead now still get's to have those very same games on playstation console's without having to fit the majority of the bill.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head.  If Sony is investing almost a billion into those sensors they must have those lucrative contracts nailed down for the foreseeable future.

Pretty Much, the thing is out of the small number of companies that produce these type of CMOS sensors, Sony is one of the few that has the 3D Stacking TSV silicon that Takes large amounts of cash and a hell of a lot of R&D to advance...LOL

Wow all of a sudden it seems like a great move.

SOE never really did anythng to help Sony or SCE. They were just a random PC dev in the middle of the giant Sony Corp. I think Kaz saw that they were in no way benifiting any the company, ecspecially now with Vaio being sold off.

Now that money can be put towards something that can help Sony. Whether it is the image sensor investment, a new gaming studio for SCE, or something for Bravia or Xperia. The money will be much better spent.

What? Sony's financial problems have affected many of their studios, with many getting shuttered and lay offs. This is much better then shuttering it, as Sony gets some profit out of it.

Nope. SOE wasn't contributing enough to Sony's console plans.

Look at their rebranding efforts recently. They are adding the name Playstation to everything they can.

Music Unlimited is becoming Playstation Music.

Video Unlimited is becoming Playstation Video.

They are going in hard with the Playstation brand right now.  Would be a strange road to go down if Sony believed Playstation was in any kind of danger.

PS4 owner will lose some cool free online games I guess. But, oh, well, there are worst stuff happening in the world.

We won't lose them, we'll just have to possibly share them with Xbox owners.

Depends on two things...how much they sold for and why they sold it. SOE has been dead weight to Playstation for a while and they are past their prime. If they use that money to form a new first party studio or two or invested in another PROFITABLE division, this is a good thing. However if they waste it on a failing division such as TVs or Phones, they are only prolonging the inevitable.

One thing is for certain though, I will be watching Sony very closely for the next year or so.
