Forums - Gaming - Video games that are "GOTY baits."

Gaming is a bit different. The critics have pretty much the same taste as the audience. Basically because most video game critics are just regular people who play a lot of games, rather than experts on game design who can really analyze what they're playing.

Adding to that, each publication assigns one person out of dozens to review a game, usually someone who actually wants to play the game and generally has a default positive opinion of it before even starting. Whereas major publications typically seem to have only a few film critics, who see every film released in the year whether they want to or not. You get a lot more instances of film critics reviewing a film that is obviously not made with them in mind as an audience than you get of game critics doing that. This is natural, since it takes much longer that the normal 2-3 hour movie length to play most games, but it's still a problem.

Imo most of the time, critics just give a score based on what they believe people will think about the game.

Aye, I covered that bit.

I can't think of any AAA game that fits your description of GOTY bait.

AAA games are made to sell as much copies as possible, not to please a few reviewers. "Oscar-bait" movies are usually made with a smaller budget, so they dont care as much about their sales. The closest thing we have to oscar bait movies, are maybe a few indie games. However, even those games are made for more than just being a GOT contender on some gaming website.

The comment at start about being Anita bait... Bioware was inclined to gender equality while before Anita made a fuss, and I doubt many designers are too concerned with her antics on a conscious level as she seems somewhat unpleasable. (Not justifying attacks on her obviously. In fact I do think someone needs to do the job she is trying to, but I don't think she is the right person for it and, given my belief that we should have a more sexual, more gender-fluid world I will admit I do have some political animosity to some of her antics.)

LOL. No offense, I know this is not a conspiracy that you created but um... no. It doesn't really fly in the gaming world. The risks are far greater.

Well, his description and definitions and your point fit quite well to some cases. The first that springs to my mind is...

...

Duke Nukem Forever.

Stwike him, Centuwion. Stwike him vewy wuffly! (Pontius Pilate, "Life of Brian")
A fart without stink is like a sky without stars.
TGS, Third Grade Shooter: brand new genre invented by Kevin Butler exclusively for Natal WiiToo Kinect. PEW! PEW-PEW-PEW!

Sort of. But games, unlike movies, have a bigger distinction between the good and the bad. They might introduce the gimmick or the extra-extra Polishness GOTYs have to please the critics, gamers or whatever to the gameplay or story that can make, break or just improve the game ever so slightly yet it's not like GOTYS the past few years followed a pattern and all they shared was good gameplay and story.

.- -... -.-. -..

Bioware games have felt like that for a long time, well before Tumblr existed or anyone had ever heard of Anita Sarkeesian. I think they are more influenced by the weird people who hang out in the Bioware forums and obsess sexually over the various characters, and they don't want posters bitching about how they couldn't get off because black lesbian genderfluid transdwarves are their thing and there weren't any.

Anything with a focus on MP is GOTY-bait

The only game I can even sort of think of that may fall into this is Journey.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

When gaming gets its equivalent of an Oscar, we might start seeing attempts at video game Oscar-bait. Until then, naw, we just have selective pandering to different types of audiences.
