Forums - Sales - Hardware Charts Week Ending Jan 10th

Well, this is obviously garbage. Every PS4 sold that week was packed with TLOU and yet it got no boost  but Ass Creed got counted as usual. It doesn't make sense.

Jan 10, TY ioi! I remember the Xbox One ahead of PS4 on Amazon and it was only third party. I wouldn't say it's impossible for the Xbox One to outsell in US but it's not likely.

It looks like some adjustments will have to be made and post holiday numbers like we expected.

Will be interesting to see UK Wii U numbers for the following week considering this story....

Why? Doesn't it make sense to you that the X1 for some reason only dropped 43% week over week, when everything else had at least a 54% drop?

Yeah and then the fact Microsoft cut the price permanently after the week! But even after that it's still losing.

I'm sure it's just for legal purpose. They had plan this when they saw the good sales in Nov/Dec not because of the probably poor sales of the first week.

And what legal purpose might that be? MS can't be had for false advertising, because all they need to do is say that their intention was to raise the price on 3 January, but a reevaluation on 2 January lead them to conclude that raising the price was a bad business decision. Done, end of story.

Rather than dreaming up a legal reason for why MS had no choice but to raise the price for 2 weeks, far simpler and more likely is that MS got feedback from retailers that the bottom had fallen out of Xb one sales. But aside from whether or not there were mysterious legal reasons for temporarily raising the price, market forces and the laws of economics dictate that when the price of a thing goes up, demand for it goes down, this is a fundamental principle of market economics MS and Xbox are not magically immune to this reality. And when the price goes up in a falling market (which first post holiday week most assuredly is; every year, for every product, ever since consumerism took over Christmas) demand goes down even more than what would normally occur. So for Xb one to be the only console (home or handheld) to experience a WoW drop of less than 50% is nothing short of an economic miracle. Everyone who actually has a semblance of understanding of market forces and economics will be absolutely astounded if the current VGC numbers stack up.

Stupid question: Nintendo released figures of 9.2mil for Wii U as of Dec 31. We know retailers keep a particularly low stock of Wii Us for the simple reason that they don't sell as well as the others so tying up capital in slow selling inventory is not smart. So 300K of unsold inventory at retailers seems high? Higher inventory if Ps4s makes sense because said inventory is moving through the channel almost as fast as it can be replenished. Will be interesting to see about X1 inventory levels now the price is increased.

Will you be adjusting Wii U numbers?

I wouldn't say it's a silly question. 300K in the retail channels is reasonably high, for the rate of sales Wii U looks to be experiencing. But considering the global market and the number of retailers that need to have at least one or 2 Wii U's on hand, and then retailer warehouses need to have the ability to rapidly re-stock if and when a Wii U sells, 300K seems like close to the minimum number of consoles you need to have in the supply chain even if you're only selling at a rate of 40K per week. 300K is only 7 weeks supply at 40K per week, and that's not a terribly large amount of inventory for all retailers everywhere in the world to be collectively carrying. And then of course there's the fact that Wii Uwas blowing through 300K in the space of 2 weeks not that long ago, so being somewhat up on inventory at this time of the year is not at all surprising. I would think by about June, if sales continue at the rate the seem to be post holidays the global inventory might drop down to 200K, but I can't see retailer inventory getting below that until Nintendo stops making the Wii U.

So I don't expect Wii U numjbers to be adjusted up at all.

If anything it's overtracked.  Between store shelves and retailer warehouses there would be about 300k plus sitting there.

No chance XB1 at $399 was still selling above PS4 in USA.

Like someone's just pointed out, why would they drop the price so quickly if it was outselling the PS4 at a higher price?

they most certainly made the call based on both the holiday success and them looking at the upcoming early 2015 PS4 games, also they would want to do it early enough to keep momentum, I don't think they had factored in early VGC  mid jan figures when they made their decision.

Ouch for all numbers. 3DS will rise soon though because of new3DS

Maybe just maybe during the holidays because the Xbox One price cut was temporary, a lot of third party bought the system and are reselling them at a lower price and VGC are tracking those "resell". That would explain the Xbox One being above PS4...

Really....? So if a reseller buys from a reseller then resells their purchase that was once originally purchased from MS it would count as 3 sales.... what if I then bought it then sold it once agian 4 sales!!!!!!!!! you sir have cracked the nut on unbelievable PR gold........

I guess you missed the part where I said "Maybe just maybe".

I am pretty sure you have read a lot of other comments saying that they really don't understand why and how the Xbox One was on top for the week, after people are checking and posting day in, day out, hours after hours, how the PS4 was above the Xbox One in major retailers for that week.

During that week when the price of the Xbox One was back on top, a  lot of 3rd party from Amazon were selling the Xbox One bundle between $350 and $370 while the One that Amazon was selling was still at $400. So "maybe just maybe" those 3rd party sellers got a good deal during the holidays and decide to make some money out of it by reselling the console.

Sorry but this is no "unbelievable PR gold". I was just trying to make sense of the numbers. I don't know if  ioi is also tracking 3rd party sellers around the US. You reply would have been much more helpfull if it had more info that would help me change my "maybe just maybe", to "oh I guess I was wrong".
