I can see what my friends have played, I know what games they've completed.

- I can do that from everywhere
- I know with which people I can talk about what games (general talk, getting help etc.)
- I can do some friendly competition
- I can extend my playtime of games, with things or ways of playing I normally wouldn't do.
etc.

Yeah, all of those are good things. I appreciate this comment.

You see, I only own a 360 and don't have Xbox Live or any friends added so I never really experienced this. Thanks again.

Is this a joke with achievements filling up memory?

Its like a penny. One of them is practically nothing. Just like one achievement. But once you start to get a ton of them, they add up. Especially if you are someone who gets games with a ton of achievements and a lot of games. Also, if you don't or can't buy external memory holders, then it really will add up.

So it is a joke, right?

Please read up on relational databases and how many bytes a string of text is worth.

achievements are tiny, like really tiny.
A standard 360 profile is about 2MB of size, my current profile is 89MB with 604 games played and a total of 22792 achievements (it doesn't matter if they're unlocked or not).
That's still low enough to fit on the internal memory of the arcade 360 and/or Wii. On 8th gen console it's even less of a concern. (although the profiles might very well be a bit bigger there)

well they do add some small pictures.
151 kB per game on my profile for a game. Probably around 3.5 kB per achievement picture or so. (assuming an average of 40 achievements per game)

I really like achievements. They make me want to replay the game and try to get as many as I can. I've liked them ever since I got my first achievement many years ago. I'm not sure why, and I didn't even add any friends on Xbox live when I got that, so it wasn't because I wanted to pass my friends GS or something like that.  But I'm not obsessed with them and usually give up if they're too hard.

Achievements are nice little things, but not something I would die over.

If Nintendo adds an achievement system, I won't really care.

If Sony, Microsoft, or Steam removes achievements, I won't really care.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I don't care for achievements/trophies. And I pretty much ignore them.

That said, I don't think they should go away... I don't really know how to answer the poll with "yes/no" either.

"Never argue with stupid people. They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience."

Achievements need to go.

Honestly, while I do enjoy them in some games I play, they just make the experience boringly stupid. I find myself plenty of times playing the games just to unlock a specific achievement and after beating the game, I never pick it up again. It just obliterates every bit of replay value a game has. There's no motivation to replay it after you unlock all achievements.

That's why I dislike Steam. It destroyed me and I'm unable to enjoy my games like I did.

Trophies really increase the replayability of games tremendously. Nintendo is missing a golden opportunity to increase software sales by not implementing an alternative

I like trophies and don't completely understand the people against them. If you don't care for them, just ignore them. Nintendo should definitely consider getting them since for some people achievements/trophies are a selling point.  Also, on PS4 you can change your settings so that only you can see your trophies.
