Forums - Nintendo - Idea that would make Nintendo $1Billion

They don't need the money right now. Rather, then need to prove to investors that they are capable of generating money by operations.

Next time you are going to say they need to sell buildings and then how "brilliant" is that move...

They could sell it if they have a couple more Wii U's. The value of the team probably won't go down considering it's baseball.

"You should be banned. Youre clearly flaming the president and even his brother who you know nothing about. Dont be such a partisan hack"

they should make a deal with disney... nintendo gets the game licenses form diseny and disney the movie right from nintendo.

That would be an absolutely terrible move. The team is finally moving up and likely to reach the postseason this year.

Why would you sell it? To dump more into video games? What a terrible suggestion.

Companies often keep money in things like because they are long-term investments that they can cash into during emergencies. I don't think Nintendo should give up the Mariners.

http://blogs.seattletimes.com/mariners/2013/10/01/mariners-have-more-than-doubled-franchise-value-while-losing-big/

"But they continue to rack up huge wins in the mighty pocketbook, having more than doubled franchise value since the 2008 stock market meltdown despite putting some of the worst teams in franchise history on the field. At the start of the 2009 season, Forbes assessed the Mariners at a value of $426 million — well down from a year earlier with a 101-loss season at a $117 million payroll helping cause that."

That was after a season where they 71-91. They then finished last year with 87 wins, missing the playoffs by just 1 game. The team is seriously on the uprise in the AL West.

As of March 2014 they were valued at over $700M. Nintendo purchased them for just $100M.

that's actually not such a bad idea however the issue is that Nintendo's IP's are worth an incredible amount (probably more than their company is currently valued)

I mean the Mario IP I have no idea how high some companies/groups would pay to have

Nintendo is the last company with as many recognizable IP's as to rival Disney. so I don't think I would like that deal just because it would give Disney a total monopoly over the entertainment industry (at least potentially in films)

also bear in mind the reason that Nintendo has not made featured films often with their characters is because they worry about hurting their brand and are very very careful in terms of maintaining the value and representation of their IP's. they apparently are brought movie pitches quite often

I do think it is an interesting concept though the Disney thing you bring up- it would certainly do a large boost to Nintendo to be the exclusive game producer of Disney franchises, and it would match their user base (Nintendo fans + family's + kids) fine

I think the real issue with it though is that it would benefit Disney far more than Nintendo. The Nintendo IPs (Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Pokemon) could do ginormous figures as films

one thing that blows my mind though ist hat Nintendo has never made large amusement parks

look how popular Disney World is- or even Universal Studios. Nintendo has a kajillion characters and universes in which it could make rides and attractions for, and I could see it being as popular as any other theme parks on the planet

as for the OP's question about the baseball team- if it's making them 200m a year currently then why would they sell it? to make the value of a company/asset in 5 years time (1 billion / 5 = 200m) is an incredibly successful investment

also bear in mind that they've owned the team for quite a while and probably made back their investment costs long ago. at this point it is an asset that is just making them money from year to year

cash flow is not the problem. Nintendo has cash. I think OP you were suggesting maybe that Nintendo get more cash on hand (rather than maintain assets) to possibly purchase another big studio. but they can already take over a game studio that is under 1b and any studio that's over would be CONSIDERABLY over (i.e. Capcom) and very risky to consume

They should sell it as it really doesn't offer anything for their core business.

This seems to be the idea behind all of the "M$ should sell of the Xbox Unit" comments. The odd thing is that M$ actually gets tie ins from the xbox itself into other parts of its business. Whereas the Mariners bring nothing to Nintendo's core business.

If I was a stockholder in Nintendo, I would keep it for the cashflow.

It is near the end of the end....

The Mariners are part of Hiroshi Yamauchi's legacy, I don't think Nintendo would want to harm that.

Not to mention the reason everyone else is stating--the Mariners make them money.

Bets:

1. If the Wii U sells closer to 10 million LTD by 1/3/2015 I win. If it sells closer to 9.5 million LTD by 1/3/2015 OfficerRaichu15 wins (winner gets 2 weeks of avatar control)--Lost.

I think people need to realize something -- Nintendo doesn't want to expand. They are happy being a smaller company.

Iwata has said that if they got too big a lot of Nintendo's "culture" would be lost.

That's why even during the height of the DS/Wii when they were pulling in billions, they still refused to really expand in a big way.

Nintendo isn't being held back by cash. They simply don't want to expand.

Nintendo is a public company that must be accountable to their investors. Nintendo has to produce positive return and generate revenues. Selling the Mariners will not generate long term revenues. If Iwata doesn't manage the business properly and turn thing around he will either lose his job or get demoted which is the Japanesse way.

If that means Nintendo would get access to Marvel IP too ... that would be a huge win for Nintendo and a no-brainer.
