In a word: no.

Looking at its healthy library that has both good exclusives and all of the same third party games actually puts it above the PS4. Of course, it still doesn't come close to the flavors of exclusives on the Wii U...

Just because something sells well doesn't always mean it's the best. Hell, iPhones are a good example of this

By that logic, Dreamcast wasn't a failure!

I'm not really sure why this topic exists. I'm not trying to be mean, but you already gave the numbers, and the only logical answer is that the Xbox One is not a failure.

Or if Microsoft didn't have such a huge warchest, it would of flopped.  It still was a failure because Microsoft is having to acces their warchest.  If the Xbox division was spun off like investors hope, It'd fail.

I do agree this thread is pointless.  It's in the Microsoft section.  The poll is biased.

Exactly. Microsoft has a huge warchest, and everyone knows that.

It's not massive at all though. In the US it has about 37.1% marketshare compared to 39.4% for the 360. Globally it has 28.6% compared to the 360's 31.3%

Yeah, it's dropped. But 2-3% is hardly a massive drop.

You know why that's a bad argument Kapi

Because I said 'Globally' after saying 'In the US'?

You never put US behind the world. Infidel.

The Dreamcast was a financial failure for Sega, sure (but they were hemorraghing money long before that), yet many people look upon the Dreamcast with positive favor.  I owned one, and I enjoyed the games that came to it thoroughly, and I STILL want more PSO (PSU wasn't BAD, but...), and I'm waiting until Sega gets smart enough to bring PSOII to the Wii U stateside!

In comparison to the market leader, its a failure.

Financial it is, market wise it is.

Or misleading things such as someone claiming to know 'the only thing that matters to MS'...

In your attempt at a straw person argument, you seem to have forgotten what "misleading" actually means. There is nothing misleading about that.

But just to tie it up, yes, marketshare is their focus for platform building. Not only is this fundamental to microeconomics, but we have witnessed it in their recent  bundling, price slashing, and advertising. They've cut profitability for the sake of marketshare, since console owners buy games, accessories, and services.

Sales > Marketshare. I'm sure they'd rather have 100m sales with a 5% marketshare than 5m sales with a 80% marketshare. Any business would.

Secondly, they would care about overall marketshare, they see Nintendo as a competitor even if you don't.

Finally they would also have a big interest in regaining goodwill among consumers. After the terrible reveal and everything after that they would have drastically changed their expectations. They won't be planning on beating the PS4 anymore (if they are they are kinda stupid), they'll be focusing on restoring peoples trust in them as much as possible and putting themselves in a good position for the future again.

1. Market size doesn't actually fluctuate that wildly, so it's a moot point.

2. They're competing primarily for different audiences, with a little overlap. Given the smallness of shared demographics and the Wii U's struggles, MS are committed to competing with Sony and make all of their moves to specifically counter that one rival.

3. That's true! But salvaging a failure is not the same as having a success. The good news is that it can mean future success! The PS3 failed relative to the past gains for Sony, but they salvaged it into the winning setup for the PS4. If MS do well, they can set up tbe Xbox Two the same way. This definitely isn't doom and gloom! c: They're both collecting profits and learning. People here ars taking "failure" way too harshly and are not considering a bigger picture. Fortunately, these commenters aren't in charge of Xbox.

I don't consider it a failure. I am fairly certain it is profitable for Microsoft. As people mentioned, there is no RROD fiasco like last generation. And sales are up compared to the 360. They are probably going to sell 60 - 80 million units by the time the generation is done.

From 500 to 350 in a year, cosntant free games to to spur sales.  Decupled a large invenstment like the Kinetc.

In no chance are they profitable.  And it will never sale 60 million, 80 is just fairy tale thinking.

Is gonna be a failure in the sene that I dont see it reaching xbox 360 numbers, the same way ps3 was considered a failure compare to ps2. There is no kinect this time around to give a second air like xbox 360 had, but profit wise is going to be okay I guess.

So far, the Xbox One is not a failure. PS4 might be far ahead than it, but they turned the console around into a desirable product. Game.com, the Virtual Boy, the 3DO, the Atari Jaguar, the N-Gage... those can be considered as rotund failures.
