Or misleading things such as someone claiming to know 'the only thing that matters to MS'...

In your attempt at a straw person argument, you seem to have forgotten what "misleading" actually means. There is nothing misleading about that.
But just to tie it up, yes, marketshare is their focus for platform building. Not only is this fundamental to microeconomics, but we have witnessed it in their recent bundling, price slashing, and advertising. They've cut profitability for the sake of marketshare, since console owners buy games, accessories, and services.

Sales > Marketshare. I'm sure they'd rather have 100m sales with a 5% marketshare than 5m sales with a 80% marketshare. Any business would.
Secondly, they would care about overall marketshare, they see Nintendo as a competitor even if you don't.
Finally they would also have a big interest in regaining goodwill among consumers. After the terrible reveal and everything after that they would have drastically changed their expectations. They won't be planning on beating the PS4 anymore (if they are they are kinda stupid), they'll be focusing on restoring peoples trust in them as much as possible and putting themselves in a good position for the future again.

1. Market size doesn't actually fluctuate that wildly, so it's a moot point.
2. They're competing primarily for different audiences, with a little overlap. Given the smallness of shared demographics and the Wii U's struggles, MS are committed to competing with Sony and make all of their moves to specifically counter that one rival.
3. That's true! But salvaging a failure is not the same as having a success. The good news is that it can mean future success! The PS3 failed relative to the past gains for Sony, but they salvaged it into the winning setup for the PS4. If MS do well, they can set up tbe Xbox Two the same way. This definitely isn't doom and gloom! c: They're both collecting profits and learning. People here ars taking "failure" way too harshly and are not considering a bigger picture. Fortunately, these commenters aren't in charge of Xbox.
