No they did not. PS3 launched in November of 2006. They sold 394,937 consoles in November. They sold 857,103 consoles in December. The Xbox 360 (which was already ahead by a few million units before November of 2006) sold 849,098 consoles in November. They sold 2,046,655 consoles in December. The 360 had been selling for a year. When the PS3 launched people still didn't want it like they wanted the Xbox 360. Be that price, games, etc the PS3 was nowhere near the 360 in terms of sales for the beginning, even if we don't look at the year of sales the 360 did before the PS3 even came out. The PS3 was not a failure, but it had the same thing happen to it that the Xbox One did... lower starting sales. That doesn't mean failure.

I am not sure where you got your numbers from, but this chart will clear some things up:

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=151051&page=1#1

If you look at the ALIGNED launches of both the PS3 and the XB360, the PS3 was doing better.  So by saying that the PS3 was getting demolished or "The PS3 launched people still didn't want it like they wanted the Xbox 360" is completely false.

Additionally, apart from you of course, who aligns the 2005 launch of the XB360 with the sales of PS3 at 2005?  You said it yourself...PS3 didn't launch until November of 2006.  That is like comparing the PS1 to the console that Microsoft never put out.  When you compare data, you might want to have two sets of data...not just Microsoft sales versus ZERO PS3 sales for the first year of the 7th generation and then say XB360 domination!!

By aligning the sales for the first year of the XB360 to that of the PS3, one can actually gather information from the data.  What you did is simply ridiculous and uninformative.

If the PS3 had "lower starting sales", then the XB360 had even LOWER starting sales!

Well xbox is doing good if you consider they pulled these numbers with the 360 being a year ealier. But on the other hand ps4 is doing a lot better if you consider the ps2 pulled similiar numbers without any equillant competion hardwarewise in its first year.

I never had any expectations for X1 sales wise or quality. It will just be another average console like the first 2 and sell less than the 360,but more than the Xbox. The all in one idea and Kinect are failures though.

The Kinect is a failure, but the system itself is definitely not. Just because it's not the best selling system doesn't mean it's a failure.

Little more than a year have now passed since both the PS4 and the Xbox One was released, and as we all know the PS4 is doing very well. But how about the Xbox One? Do you consider it a failure or  success for MS?

Let's just look at a few numbers before we start the argument discussion:

X360 had managed to sell close to 8m units by the end of 2006 after little more than a year on market. The XB1 on the other hand have managed to sell close to 11m units in the same time frame (before any adjustments).

That's a 3m difference between the both consoles. HOWEVER, while X360 managed to keep the same pace as PS3 (although, neither could keep up with Wii), XB1 have been left in the dust by PS4. But does this truly mean XB1 is a FAILURE?

XB1 is constantly outselling its predecessor, the X360, but can't compete with PS4. Does that mean it's a success or a failure?

Keep the discussion civil, do NOT troll or flame! This is an interesting discussion to be had, so don't ruin it!!

The Xbox one is a total success. Compare to their past effort this is Microsoft bestselling console and it's also profitable.

You're comparing the 18.5 million PS4 sold to 11 million Xbox One. There are a few markets that will never support Xbox one like Japan and some European countries. If we look at only the two largest market in the world - UK and NA.

North America (NA) - PS4 - 7.48 million (52.3%) vs Xbox One - 6.81 million (47.66%)

UK - PS4 - 1.81 million (55.52%) vs Xbox One - 1.45 million (44.48%) (Europe PS4 - 7.35 vs Xbox One 2.88)

UK and NA make ups:

9.29/18.5 = 50% of PS4 market

8.26/11 = 75% of Xbox One market

We all know that the PS4 is a massive success worldwide and one of the bestselling console to date.

But if you look at what the Xbox One has manage to do in the two biggest markets UK and NA. They achieve massive success of their own and if the trend continues they might even catch up to PS4 in these markets.

There no surprise that PS4 is outselling Xbox one in Japan, Germany, and France..... But don't let the PS4 success in these market take away how well the Xbox one has manage to do in NA and UK. Sony was never the underdog; they were the sales leader and screw up majorly with the PS3 initial release. The PS4 had a flawless release and I am actually surprise how well Microsoft Xbox One has performed considering all the mistakes that they made. The future for Xbox one is very bright and they should probably avoid spending too much marketing money on the Market dominated by PS4.

The XOne is doing good.

It's has failed massively to meet the expectations of ms. Look at all the price cuts and 180's they had to do. Plus the death of Kinect. From MS point of view a failure.

I have to agree with this.

What are you talking about? It is already close to the market share 360 had at the end of 7th Gen.

You're accidentally abusing the data to make an incorrect observation. Read my response to Ka-pi for more detail; I'm on mobile.

Well, if you can alter reality to a place where Wii did not exist, then of course XBox has lost market share :). Thankfully neither you or me can do that, but I am guessing Wii dissapeared in order for your argument to make any sense :).

OT: In some ways, all consoles can be regarded as failures, but it is almost always subjective. In terms of development of the console business, this generation in regards to PS4 and X1 is a complete failure since it doesn´t feel like an evolved business at all. In that regard, WiiU is the success since it is actually trying different ideas. Sales wise, WiiU is a failure, while PS4 and X1 are quite succesful so far. As a total, this generation will shrink massively from the last, making it a failure as a whole.

IMHO it's doing above average. PS4 is doing much better that is why it seems XB1 is a failure.
