Forums - Nintendo - BREAKING: Club Nintendo Discontinuation Schedule Announced!!!

That is quite a change!
I never expected Club Nintendo to be over when Iwata talked about the reward program. Something big must be coming our way, although i fear we won't get to know what it is before E3.

Hope the change really is for the better.

I'm not too sad about that but now I have to use my coins for something. And hopefully this doesn't lead to paid online cause I won't get it.

I've not been overly impressed with the rewards you can exchange your points for, so I hope that this means there'll be something better on the way.

Any news about the EU one?

I saw the same announcement on Nintendo's UK site, so I guess this applies to all.

So instead of free games/stuff it will be discounts on games? I'm not so sure that is a good tradeoff. But then again who knows? Nintendo knows they need to do something to stand out against PS+ and Live Gold.

That's probably oversimplifying it. We don't really know any of the details. That's just speculation based off past comments at investor meetings and probably doesn't tell the whole story.

But getting cheaper games the more you buy, if the discount is strong enough, could be huge.

I think there's an investor meeting at the end of this month. The timing is too perfect. We'll probably find out then.

I would like for them to make the next rewards system accissible on the menus of WiiU and 3DS as an app, with seemless transition, instead of only having it be browser based.

I don't think it was mentioned that this would be instead of free stuff.

I think physical gifts are gone, but there will be an increase in things like (better) free VC games. Nintendo has been making fairly deliberate moves to move towards digital options.

I also agree 100% with the awards being accessable on the 3DS and Wii U. It should honestly just be an added eshop feature, but if they are rewarding players for "signing up," I don't know what it'll be.

"If we succeed in the redefinition of video game platforms that I speak of today, our account-based connections with consumers will become very clear. For example, until now it has been taken for granted that software is offered to users at the same price regardless of how many titles they purchase in a year, be it one, five or even ten titles. Based on our account system, if we can offer flexible price points to consumers who meet certain conditions, we can create a situation where these consumers can enjoy our software at cheaper price points when they purchase more. Here, we do not need to limit the condition to the number of software titles they purchase. Inviting friends to start playing a particular software title is also an example of a possible condition. If we can achieve such a sales mechanism, we can expect to increase the number of players per title, and the players will play our games with more friends. This can help maintain the high usage ratio of a platform. When one platform maintains a high active use ratio, the software titles which run on it have a higher potential to be noticed by many, which leads to more people playing with more titles. When we see our overall consumers, they generally play two or three titles per year. We aim to establish a new sales mechanism that will be beneficial to both consumers and software creators by encouraging our consumers to play more titles and increasing a platform’s active use ratio without largely increasing our consumers’ expenditures.
Nintendo aims to work on this brand-new sales mechanism in the medium term, but we would like to start experimenting with Wii U at an early stage." - Iwata

If you ask me, whatever Iwata is describing here is what will be replacing Club Nintendo. He's clearly talking about this and how it relates to Nintendo's future Nintendo Network-based unified platform and they already said that they'd start with the Wii U. Basically, they're starting to make moves towards their next console NOW. VERY exciting!

I think so to. It was probabally easier to do away with to old programs they had inplace and release a new streamlined one that covers all markets, then to retrofit it to what was there. (Because there has been talk to doing away with the region locking.) This may include the ddp that is also discontinuing this year also.

I really liked the ddp. It wasn't sensible how they implemented it but it really encouraged purchases on the eshop. If they do something that combines the ddp and club Nintendo with better games or heavy discounts then I really can't complain. First thing they should do is  lower the price of all their eshop games vs physical games. Actually every console maker should be doing that.

It's true. Iwata may talk a little about it, but given that the press release stated that it would arrive until the end of the year, my first guess was that it won't be revealed or even out in the coming months.
Also, it would really be a good topic to discuss during Nintendo's E3 presentation.

But if the reward program starts sooner, so much the better!
