I think physical gifts are gone, but there will be an increase in things like (better) free VC games. Nintendo has been making fairly deliberate moves to move towards digital options.

I also agree 100% with the awards being accessable on the 3DS and Wii U. It should honestly just be an added eshop feature, but if they are rewarding players for "signing up," I don't know what it'll be.
