Forums - Sony - Sony: We Will Conquer All

The best quotes:

“Without question there’s very much a sense of confidence and renewed enthusiasm. It happened so fast we can’t help but do a little high-fiving in the office.”

High-fiving eh?

“Things probably moved rapidly for our competition too, in the opposite direction."

Oh really?

What surprises me most is how people get irritated with PR talk. They are paid to say stuff within this nature. Nothing unexpected here. We see this type of talk from Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony.

I can't imagine some guy from Sony saying, "Oh, the competition has a great lineup of software and hardware, I can't argue with that, but here's why I think ours is marginally better." In your dreams, people. Be mature and don't let the company's arrogance tug on your panties. Make judgements for your purchases for yourself.

And that's why people get so irritated. You see Sony does unbelievably bad PR. Usually when you're supposed to do PR, you're supposed to say that competition has done good and they have some good games in their lineup, but we just have better. And we see the trend changing because of X and Y, and we are very positive considering the future. These kind of statements cause even uncertainity for shareholders, since you give an impression that you don't know what you are doing and has the company understood what they have done wrong so far. Edit: Forgot to add, that when you're going to mock the competition, you're supposed to take a stab, instead of outing outright lies. And instead of saying they are good, but we are better, Sonys PR usually says we suck hard, but they suck even harder.

I dunno, videogame PR often seems to be childish. Probably hoping it'll gain popularity with the school yard crowd. It's been the default way to assault a Nintendo lead anyway.

I mean

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7GxI9aiiYE

Genisis Does what Nintendon't?

Those were some classic commercials.

But yeah.  Sony's PR has been the worst.  Probably because these guys aren't battle tested.  Their used to their systems actually being the best instead of being at the back of the line.

Wonder how bad Nintendo's N64 PR must have been.

Well, nothing compares to Megadrive vs. SNES bashing. As far as i recall, the N64 PR was like Sonys arrogant PS3 "everybody wants our system because we lead the market and are the most powerful option available" -PR.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

"Metal Gear Solid 4 will not, I repeat NOT come to Xbox360"

PR spin is really annoying to read. At least the all out PR spin like that.

Off-topic, but does anyone have a youtube link of that guy doing his speech? I don't completely understand why that picture always comes up.

If I were a Sony fan, I would be extremely concerned about this quote, that no one else has mentioned yet:

It is clearly an article of faith at Sony that the PS2 hordes are just waiting for the right moment to assert their dedication to The Brand, and join the party. “The PlayStation fan continues to be loyal to the PlayStation brand. We see huge overlap on PS3 ownership and PSP ownership and PS2 ownership. So we continue to put in the bank millions of PS2 owners who are ripe for upgrading to PS3 at the right point in time.

It looks like the Sony heads are still naively assuming that PS2 owners all want to upgrade to PS3s, and will do so in the near future. That's the sort of thing I expect to hear from an Internet fanboy, not the PR director of a major corporation. They still just don't "get it", which is really the only way I can put it. If I were in that position, I'd be working aggressively to maintain or win back the loyalty of PS2 gamers, especially the casual ones who never bought more than a yearly Madden/FIFA or Grand Theft Auto. The arrogant attitude that says "[we] put in the bank millions of PS2 owners" is the very reason why the PS3 has struggled so much to this point.

“The time that they had to create huge distance and build a massive install base before the PS3 could really take root; that opportunity is over and there’s no real capitalization of it. They had a great crescendo moment with Halo and it helped catapult them into a pretty strong position towards the back end of last year, but they were still within a stone’s throw of where they were with the original Xbox. "

I said this a million times! . The 360's year was last year, and even with their best game and lower price they couldn't pull away from the PS3. I dont think the 360 can possibly sell more more this year than last(if any) , but I'm positive the PS3 will with games, blu-ray, and features attracting more people.

I dont think Banjo, Fable, and GoW2 is as good as Bioshock,Mass Effect, and Halo 3.

Nope you're right. But they don't have to cause these games aren't gonna dissapear or decrease in quality all of a sudden.

+ GTA4 exclusive content, + Alan Wake, + Tales of Vesperia, + $100,- price difference, + Gears 2, + incredibly strong existing catalog

I think 360 can be competitive at least. I agree that PS3 will have a good year though.

"The time that they had to create huge distance and build a massive install base before the PS3 could really take root" How long thit they actually plan for it to take root?

I think his wrong.  Comparing those last 6 games shows that you have this year a pure RPG in fable, Pure Adventure/action in Banjo, and finally at least for me GoW2 is  a way better shooter then Halo 3.  Again is all about preference and this year the 360 has the best variety which can get more people to buy it.  Again not trying to knock the PS3 as it does have some good games coming out but the 360 is as good if not better especially if you look at diversity.  This will be a very interesting year :)

I'll respond to you guys in order. First let me say that I dont think you are wrong. I can see where you are coming from on all of this. But heres the reasoning behind that.

1st poster: I agree that Halo 3 will still be around and qualilty doesn't die off over time. But the effects are far as hardware sales are done for all of those games past a few 1,000 consoles except for Halo 3. COD4 is the game to beat as of right now. Halo 3's ability to sell consoles was mostly replaced by COD4's popularity, Bioshocks hype stopped by Halo 3, and Mass Effect never really mattered much. So all three are good games, but you won't find many people buying console games because of those games. A couple of people will buy it because its good, but they will buy their consoles because of GTAIV  or GOW2 for the most part.

2nd poster:And the 360 does not have the best variety. Just because it has an RPG, an action game, and a shooter doesn't mean it has great variety. You are only comparing the most mentioned PS3 games, while leaving out some of the big games that aren't as talked about. White Knight, Valkyria, GT5, MGS4, RFOM2. The PS3 is touching on every genre this year.

Also, the 360 might have highly acclaimed games, but Fable 2 and Banjo are not system sellers. I dont even know why Banjo is such a big deal to be honest. But those games are raised to that level and called system sellers because its all the 360 has exclusively(thats been announced) thusfar. But Fable 2 and Banjo are not on the level with GT5 or MGS4, or RFOM2 for that matter. If you want to be honest you know its true. In terms of selling hardware, the 360 has Gears of War announced this year. In no ways does it have software that will move more hardware than last year, because all their games combined minus Gears this year wont move as much hardware as Halo 3 did by itself.

The last thing you guys are realizing is that the PS3 and the 360 are not equals. Its not all about gaming quality(as you can see with the Wii game sales). What the 360 showed last year was that even with pricing and the best games it still couldn't break 10,000,000 in a year. If the situation was reversed between the PS3 and 360, the PS3 would have it 14,000,000 or more lost year. Owners of a PS2 will either not get a console, or wait until the PS3 is attractive in most cases to pick up a new console.  It takes more than being slightly better for someone to take the brand name leap and leave all of their favorite games behind. Microsoft needs to sell their console from scratch with games, pricing and features. Sony merely needs to tell people to upgrade. Thats where the difference lies.

Lets agree to disagree when it comes to games.

Wait, you don't know Saddam's Information Minister?

http://www.welovetheiraqiinformationminister.com/

"Our initial assessment is that they will all die"

"I blame Al-Jazeera - they are marketing for the Americans!"

"God will roast their stomachs in hell at the hands of Iraqis."

"They're coming to surrender or be burned in their tanks."

"Who are in control, they are not in control of anything - they don't even control themselves!"

"We are not afraid of the Americans. Allah has condemned them. They are stupid. They are stupid" (dramatic pause) "and they are condemned."

"I can say, and I am responsible for what I am saying, that they have
started to commit suicide under the walls of Baghdad. We
will encourage them to commit more suicides quickly."

"We have destroyed 2 tanks, fighter planes, 2 helicopters and their shovels - We have driven them back."

He's the best PR man of all time!
