While the game is great for the reasons you listed I still believe the waify mechanic made it much more popular. Much like Fire Emblem Awakening.
Dont get me wrong I have been a fan of Fire Emblem since I first heard about it in Smash Bros Melee but it is rather miraculous that the 3DS version sold a staggering amount more than any predecessor.
