How about a PS3 for 200$! =D |
Not really. What I want is a nice, quiet Blu-ray player that doesn't double as a toaster oven and can easily fit in the spot my 2.5" high DVD player resides. That would be sweet.

Are you trying to troll or was that statement just sarcasm? Anyhow, good luck finding a blu-ray player as small as the PS3.

A slimline, $200 PS3 that produces almost no heat and runs silently? Where do I sign??

Neither. I'm looking for a nice, quiet, cool-running, low-profile Blu-ray player. I would hate to see your collection of audio/video equipment if you consider the PS3 to be "small" compared to the standard DVD player these days.

It would be nice if Sony could power down the non-essential parts of the PS3 during video playback and have a quieter system. As it is now, the PS3 consumes 173 W during DVD playback and 183 W during Blu-ray playback. :(

I have somewhat higher hopes for when Sony starts using the 45 nm Cell.

In terms of image quality if you have PS3 and HDMI you are set - cant actually get any better than that no matter how much you play 1's and 0's are still the same.
While PS3 upscales normal DVD this slightly improves the quality but the main improvement in quality of DVD playback is that PS3's Progressive scan and HDMI connections simply give a far better image than the old composit connections people use currently - progressive or HDMI connections get every last detail from the DVD to your HD-TV while composite connection degrades both the color and the resolution of playback.
Price wise blu-ray is actually the same as DVD - 300 on blu-ray costs the ssame as the Delux edition 2 disk dvd set. The Blu-ray has the same extras and movie all on one disk and in Hi definition for the same price. ! Given it's also cinema quality 1080p and has better sound the blu-ray disk is far better value for money than DVD.

Anyone else wants a license? Sure. But not them, in part it was indicated, because of piracy concerns. Not that the price matters too much right now, since Sony is "struggling to keep up with the demand." |
As a BD owner and High def nut....
Until the above happens Blu ray will remain a niche product. So I guess it will be 2+3 years before BD even starts to put a dent in DVD to become mainstream home media product. I really love the format and hope that BDA is playing their cards right.
To a consumer it smells like greed from the CE's and studios wanting to prolong the glory days of DVD which didn't last as long as they would have liked.
