Forums - Gaming - DS & PSP Game Library Comparison

I've been reading for too long now, comments of the PSP's lack of decent games.  Well this is plainly not true.  So I've started this thread so that we can get together a definite list of games for both the DS and PSP based on game types.  The game types that I've included are the following:

Action Adventure, Role Playing, Driving, Platformers, Fighting, Puzzle, Shooters, Sports, Strategy

Also, I have limited each game type to 3 games so that it won't go on for ever.  So we can choose the best games for each system for each game type.

The idea is so that we can complete a list for both systems, then we can compare and hopefully finally but this to bed.  Also one final note...all the listed games, need to be released at least in Japan, US or EU or all.  No pre-releases please.

Anyway, I've started for the PSP...see below:

PSP

Action Adventure: MGS Portable Ops, GTA Vice City Stories,  Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy

THE NETHERLANDS

I don't own a PSP but the constant complaint I hear from people who own a PSP (and often a DS aswell) is that the PSP offers very few games which are really appropriate for a portable system, and very few games which are drastically different from what you can get on a home console.

I can't speak for everyone but I know there are a lot of handheld gamers like my sister (32 years old) who moved to handheld gaming with the Gameboy Color because systems like the Playstation and N64 stopped offering the types of games she enjoyed playing. There are also a lot of portable gamers who want games that can (easily) be played in 5 or 10 minute bursts.

I could be wrong but the PSP's library seems pretty good for a home console system but misses why a lot of people owned portable systems in the first place. As such, I don't believe that it is appropriate to try to line up the system's games via genre to see which is the better portable system.

I don't get this 5 or 10 minute burst...type of gaming.  In any respect....a 30 minute burst is more realistic.  Anyway, I suppose it depends on when and where people play or want to play their handhelds.  Because I travel 45 minutes each way to work every day, this is idea for me...also in my lunchbreak...I get an hour to play away.

Most of the PSP games now come in smaller chunks to allow for on the go gaming and also with the PSP's sleep mode, this was intentional to allow for pausing gameplay for prolonged periods.

Although the PSP is a handheld, I just do not want to be restricted by so called handheld games...yes tailor them for the PSP...but don't cut them down.  I and most other PSP owners like the idea of a home console system on the go...and thats why the PSP is perfect.  Not only can you play it on the bus, at your work...and....all around the house.  You don't need to go to your room (if you're a kid) to play your console....or if your missus is watching Corrie on the big TV in the Living room...you can go to the toilet if you want...or a darkened cupboard to play your PSP.

Comparing game genre's over both platforms is a good idea.  And can hopefully put alot of these false claims to sleep.

I dont see why there is a problem with having long levels, I am perfectly happy just to pause my game and put the PSP into sleep. My problem is that most of the games are avaliable on PS2 as well, and quite a lot of the time they are better, take for instance Battlefront II and LSW 2, both of which I got for both systems. On PS2, they are better games, and the graphics are marginally better and they have better campaign modes, so most people are going to get them for their PS2. On the other hand, Syphon Filter and Killzone Liberation are games that have been built around the portable system, so are perfect for them, and are not the same as any experience that you would get on a home console

Exactly. Where are the great pick up and play games for the PSP? There's not very many. The DS has everything from Brain Age to Nintendogs to Animal Crossing. You can spend an hour playing those games, or you spend 10 minutes, and feel satisfied either way. That can't be said for a GTA where you might need at least 30 minutes up to an hour to beat a tough mission. I love the kind of games the PSP, but I play them on consoles. I like that I can play the DS fifteen minutes before I go to bed and get satisfaction on what I accomplished. And I said this before the PSP was released, if someone has both a PS2 and a PSP and wants to buy some game that's available for both systems, 80 to 90 percent of the time they'll get the PS2 version. That's just the way it is.

The sleep mode of the PSP is just for that pick up and play sort of gaming ....its a shame most of the not-psp-owners out there continue to ignore this and claim the PSP cant be used to pick up and play gaming . But ,if you want some games to pick up and play fast here you have Gunpey Lumines Lumines II Virtua Tennis 3 Every Extend Extra Me and my Katamari Out Run 2006 Capcom Classics Collection Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded Gradius Collection Puzzle Quest Mercury Mercury Meltdown Loco Roco .... just to name a few .

Other than Elite Beat Agents, Lumines is the best example of the perfect hand held game.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

I think it's a perception thing. When I think of playing my PSP, I know I'm going to be on it for at least 30 minutes to an hour, whereas if I pick up my DS, I know I can do it and switch it off in 5-10 minute bursts. Load times on UMD discs also add to the perception, as do the type of games. If you want a console experience on the go, I would recommend the PSP. If you want pick up and go games, the DS has a better variety of them. DS = K.I.S.S. It is advertised as a gaming only device, whereas the PSP is a Jack of All Trades - Music, Movies, Internet, Gaming (and to some, a master of none). These are very real perceptions held by the public, not necessarily my viewpoint. The PSP is in a class of its own though. Comparing the gaming experiences between the two is hard, if not pointless.
