Forums - Gaming - Is Nintendo doomed to be a casual console maker?

Nintendo has tried from time to time to break through the casual market and to get a bit of the much fruitful hardcore gaming, but seems to fail everytime. As an adult male it's been probably 15 years since I was excited about a Nintendo console, some games has peaked my interest but not enough to dish out the money to buy a console. I know there is an exception but the majority still seems to be parents buying Nintendo systems for their kids, which isn't to bad they have a nice chunk of the casual market but the money seems to be in the hardcore gaming category (the people buying the games are buying them for themselves and can get as many as they want).

With the recent rumors of Nintendos new console coming early this gen (which makes sense), I hope they come up with something very interesting, I'd love to own a Nintendo system again. Will they go completely different like they have been doing with niche gadgets like maybe a type of VR? or will they just come out with a similar but more powerful console like the PS4/Xbone?

Edit: Also think what Microsot and Sony go through everyday just to one up each other, can Nintendo compete with that?

There's no more Call of Duty on Wii U, so clearly decasualed.

At first I thought this was just another NintenDOOM thread, but I agree with what you said. And on the next console, I've heard rumors that they're working on making a normal third party friendly console, so there's that.

casual is very subjective, I know a lot of people buying a ps4 just to play NBA, FiFa and cod... that's very casual imo. Nintendo is the only one of the big 3 developing hardcore first party open world games like xenoblade and zelda u, with exclusives like bayonetta 2,smash bros, fire emblem, fatal frame in japan (sadly), star fox, devil's third, zombiu, pikmin 3, DKTF, Metroid, etc. plus their party games and casual games I see a console maker with a lot of exclusive variety in terms of genres on their handheld and home consoles. Nintendo is not for everyone that's for sure.

With current management, unless they hit the hardware lottery again, Nintendo's audience will likely continue to be niche. Despite having the resources, they've shown little serious inclination to invest in a platform that could steal consumers away from Playstation or Xbox. Significant third party support is simply too important to go without if you want to grow market share. Without it, Nintendo consoles lack too many styles and types of games.

I never really considered Nintendo to be a casual console. Other than a Wii abberation, I think Nintendo home consoles are actually purchased mainly by hardcore gamers that are also fans of Nintendo games. Both XBox and PS are more casual consoles.

The Wii U isn't a casual console.

PS4 and XBone are way more casual than the Wii U.

I wouldn't consider Nintendo to be a casual console maker... Sure, there was the Wii but that's just one console out of 6! I do hope Nintendo will do a better job with 3rd party support and such with their next system.. They have to!

I actually think it is the opposite. The fact that Nintendo is either love it or hate it with gamers proves it is more hardcore than the other consoles. Nintendo makes wonderfully fun and top notch polished games. Compare that with the casuals on the other consoles buying up any crap that is thrown at them bugs and all.
