For GOTY consideration, I believe many voters keep in mind the sheer quantity of enjoyment they've experienced with a game, something which critics don't really compare between genres when they're scoring for a review.

If you spend 9 hours having fun on Bayonetta 2 then 100 hours having fun on Dragon Age, Smash, Mario Kart, or Destiny, and you take the GOTY question as "which title has brought you the most enjoyment," it's very easy to see why people might vote in that direction.

Besides that, though I can't speak for Bayonetta 2, I thought the characters, story, and universe in Bayonetta 1 were tacky, shallow, and forgettable. I think that's where a lot of the separation occurs down the line, months after people have played it, especially compared to something that sticks in your unconscious like a TLoU or a Dark Souls.

Great post.

That is something I tried to explain when GameSpot gave Bayo a 10. I though the reviewer was blind by his excitement and first impression to see anything negative even though he stated that the story was "utter nonsense" but even that wasn't negative for him.

I got burned by the fans. In case you are wondering.

It wasnt a demo...

It certainly felt like one :(

I'm honestly surprised that Destiny  won 5 GOTY awards!

At least it's a lot more evenly matched than last year. Last year it was either The Last of Us or Grand Theft Auto V, and the rest got scraps.

Has there been any updates here? I'm sure more GOTY winners have been announced. Would be curious to see how the new award winners stack up.

I dunno if it has been posted but Alien Isolation got GOTY from PCGamer

also was my GOTY..

The latest numbers from the site linked in the OP have been added to the OP.

Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is the best game I played this year

After that, Alien Isolation and Bayonetta 2.
Those are the 3 new games I played this year that I consider to be better than 90/100. Bayo 2 and Alien Isolation are more flawed than Donkey Kong.
