Forums - Nintendo - Pokemon As An Annual Franchise?

Do you mind Pokemon being annual?

I love it! I need my yearly fix! 39 18.40%

I can tolerate it. 38 17.92%

Meh. 17 8.02%

I'd prefer it wasn't. 103 48.58%

I hate it. I won't even play because of it. 9 4.25%

What's Pokemon? Is that ... 6 2.83%

Total:212

I'm losing my love for pokemon. I bought omega red and i havent played it in 2 weeks now. It needs change and innovation. It feels archaic and repetitive now. I'm not much for PvP so without some sort of change to the SP, i dont see myself getting the next (inevitable) gen.

To be on topic, pokemon being annual would be pretty bad in my opinion.

What I want to see:
- More mature story: Not killing and cursing but less predictable and with more mature themes. Many pokemon fans are adults at this point, we can take it.
- Updated combat: Turn base is fine but it needs something else to make it more fast-paced/dynamic.
-Harder difficulty: For the love of god, make it more challenging.

So when AC does it it's milking and ridiculous, but if it's Pokémon it's great and all ok? Lol.
And Pokémon actually comes in two games every new gen... so annual and actually twice a year most of the times and that's ok?

Really, I think it's okay for ANY game to be annual IF they can do a good game every year.
Assassin's Creed was having great games every year and was so massacred because of it, so who thinks it's okay with Pokémon, it's just like this with any other game that someone likes, so no more massacres, ok?

Really hard to try to back it up with the disaster Unity was, but it's the same principle.
When someone likes a game/franchise it's okay for him to want it every year, just like some of you are doing right now

I've noticed that too, but I think there are exceptions. I absolutely love naruto games and I don't plan on skipping any of them on any platform. But my bias doesn't make me blinded to how Cyberconnect2 is milking the franchise. There should be a new game every other year at best. And I find the whole argument of "well, if the quality is there, it's fine, but COD is being milked to death because I don't like it" laughable.

As for Pokemon. I bought X last year and don't plan on buying another one for another decade unless they finally decide to make some drastic changes. Due to its loyal fanbase, the franchise has been selling extremely well and thus hasn't evolved much at all; I find it an absolute shame.

I could have just bought my last Pokemon in Alpha Sapphire, Im just so over the franchise now. For a series about evolving monsters it would be nice if it would evolve a bit more.

I'm really burned out on Pokemon. I decided to skip on the remakes and just buy every new gen.

What annoys me theres no love for the Wii U when it comes to pokemon. Pokemon on the 3ds is saturated at this point.

I think that Pokemon in its current form fits best on handhelds, but I think that a different take on the same basic Pokemon premise could be done for home consoles.  Especially if they can tie the two games together so that they support each other rather than sapping each other, that would be a brilliant move if Nintendo were to pull it off.

Even if it best fits handhelds it wouldn't kill them to put one on consoles. It feels like X/Y just came out the other day and now we have Alpha and Omega on the same system.

Well to be fair, Alpha and Omega are remasters that let newcomers or people who skipped that gen experience it.  I'm just saying that ripping the handheld version formula whole sale and plopping it on consoles wouldn't be Nintendo's wisest move.  If they can make another Pokemon series that is similar but with key distinctions that also ties into the handhelds, that would be pretty great.

For example, setting the console games in a fairly distant past before the idealic peace time that the handhelds are set in.  Having it before or right after the wars that have monuments in Gold and Silver for example.  This would open up a lot of things:  more mature stories, crafting (predates Pokeballs so you would have to purchase Appricorn balls or craft them yourself, etc), featuring Pokemon that may have gone extinct during this time period, etc.  You could also varry combat, for example having it be active time rather than vanilla turn based.  Also, since you may have pokemon in the consoles that are extinct in the handhelds, having a means by which you could "send" them to your handheld game would be cool, like burrying a timecapsue and then having to hunt down it's location in the handheld to get the now-extinct pokemon.  I think stuff like that would make the consoles different enough to be considered an addition and supplement rather than a replacement.

Of course I don't mind, as it's not like we have to buy every single pokemon game. I generally just get a game from the start of a new gen and that's it.

TBH a new game coming out every year starts to get annoying. Would not be a problem if a game would come out every 2 years or every year but then on a different system

Do it
2014 3DS
2015 WiiU
2016 3DS
2017 WiiU
etc etc.
