Forums - Sales - PS4 OVERTRACKED WW? Interesting tidbit about PS4 install base marketshare in the US

Is PS4 overtracked?

Yes, Overtracked 40 30.08%

A little, just in the US by 400k 9 6.77%

No, spot on 13 9.77%

Still undertracked!!! 71 53.38%

Total:133

I guess the US marketshare decreased between the 10m announcement and BF so it may have been evened out. Also wasn't the ROW already undertracked before that announcement? That would skew the marketshare even more.

It could make some sense, then again it really doesn't. Here is my own simple math.

XB1 has sold a total of 5M+ in NA, its strongest territory. And at worst 4M in ROW. So basically 80% of its sales in NA = sales outside NA.

PS4 is dominant in ROW, and has shown to outsell the XB1 by as much as 2-8:1 in different territories. If we are being conservative and assume that the PS4 has only outsold the XB1 by only 2:1 in ROW then that puts the PS4 sales in ROW at ~8M. 5.6M+8M gives us 13.6M.

Now being that as of sept end, 13.5M PS4s were shipped, its kinda hard to believe that between sept and now, practically only 100k PS4s were sold. Especially when 800k PS4s were sold in november alone.

So to be realistic, its safe to assume that the PS4 is outselling the XB1 by at least 3:1 in ROW. which will put the PS4 ROW sales at around 12M. 12M + 5.6M= 17.6M. So my guess is that at worst the PS4 is at 16.5M to 17M as of right now or more. No way its less than that, or not the math just doesn't ad up.

Over-tracked...in November...in the U.S. Under-tracked world wide

Its actually undertracked since it should be ahead of wii

That isnt true. Wii sold 15.12m  by the end of November 2007 which means that PS4 could be anywhere between 15-16m

Waiting for shipments.

We can´t assume any more (we shouldn´t ever have) that PS4 has less than 2 weeks supply agains 3 months for the XOne... and the WiiU 2 days!!!

ROW is a mistery as it is much of Europe we have no official tracking.

What about RoW getting bigger every year ?

Edit : Also what if NA consumers tend to buy console sooner ? You use numbers for the whole previous gen, maybe the rest of the world which is not only that RoW buys console later in the gen on average.

Yet the PS1 finished with US market share of 37%
PS2: 34% (likely to be a little lower, VGC's numbers are outdated slightly)
PS3: 34%

So the trend is a decreasing percentage of total sales (PS3 will continue to sell strongly in ROW for a couple more years), also you have to take into account the monstrously large opening holiday for PS4 in America, and since then the percentage share has only been falling, with 2014 American sales being only 33%

PS3 only held 24% of the US console market share.

PS4 is undertracked by 500-750 K just in the Europe...

So, we have no way to know if any of the numbers make any sense?

Seems that at some point, you have to pick some set of numbers and go with it. Clearly, every data source is only a guesstimate. Even the companies themselves can only really say what was shipped.

It is near the end of the end....
