Intimate knowledge of the handheld industry, something sony does not have.
Also Nintendo do have a major USP (unique selling point) that is very innovative which gives them the edge.

i jus bought a ds....why? because i can pick it up for 5 mins and play then put it down....i hardly have time for console games these days, lucky to get in 2hours in a week i can get in 5-10 hrs/week on ds in short bursts

 yes i agree w. u - the games(pokemon mario kart legend of zelda mario party mario and sonic....) are great and the graphics aren't bad for each gen.

 

also they are cheap compared to competitors (especioally ds b.c previous gens. did not have competition) 

While not the #1 reason, I'd say hardware quality. I've got an old Donkey Kong Jr. Gamewatch from the early 80's that is beat to hell. I just got some new batteries for it and it still plays like the day I got it. The buttons don't feel warn in at all. The original Gameboy (the huge grey one) had some problems with the LCD screens going out, but other than that, Nintendo's handhelds have been rock solid.

I have 2 gamewatch's, the original Gameboy, the pocket, the color, and two DS. Not one has failed on me ever.

I also have a Lynx and the gamegear. Sadly, both of these no longer work.

its because nintendo knows the ins and outs of hand helds,,

for example everything must be perfect

just look at the price for example you dont wanna charge some one 299.99 or even 199,99 for somthing that only lasts what  4 hrs on gameplay. im refering to psp ..    

and the games were and continue to be fresh  and new ,, no ported software aside from the best games ever made that is ,  its the same reason they are now dominating the console market with the wii people say wii wont sell in the long run i think its a lie because every day it seams to not be at my walmart where as ps3s have been on a daily bases

wii -35 million  or closer to 30 million its got 20 million in a yr so ya

360-29 million since sales have declined, pretty much in favor of wii and ps3

ps3-18 million   .. ya its been long time to get 10 million so i doubt theyll catch either wii or 360 at this pace

i think nintendos got the market back ,,  even if they finish 2nd this gen it wont be that bad,    i doubt thatll happen though wii is targeted at a broad market just like every hand held has been im guessing the reasons why gc and n64 didnt is because nintendo lost momentum ,, its kinda like nascar,    all it takes is one mistake, and bam good bye to you,   but now they rebounded , by making the wii , i think in 5 yrs there will be a wii 2  thatll continue this traditon of sucess notice how nes suceeded it what did they name their next console- which also succeeded and lived til 1996  2003 in japan ,      they named it snes super nintendo entertainment system while 64 didnt fair that bad gamecube thank god for dc ,  gc would been dead last,. which it wasnt due to a 4th console that wiped out , lol  .. but ya wii is in control ps3 and 360 battle for graphics and money ,, nintendo doesnt need to do so it makes profit on one wii console alone ,
