While not the #1 reason, I'd say hardware quality. I've got an old Donkey Kong Jr. Gamewatch from the early 80's that is beat to hell. I just got some new batteries for it and it still plays like the day I got it. The buttons don't feel warn in at all. The original Gameboy (the huge grey one) had some problems with the LCD screens going out, but other than that, Nintendo's handhelds have been rock solid.
I have 2 gamewatch's, the original Gameboy, the pocket, the color, and two DS. Not one has failed on me ever.
I also have a Lynx and the gamegear. Sadly, both of these no longer work.
