Forums - Nintendo - If Nintendo does release a unified handheld/console platform next-gen, could it sell similar to Xbox/PS?

I'm going to go with no, but how the hell should I know? I need a more detailed hypothetical situation to try to estimate past that.

They CANNOT create one device with a TV-output, they'll be killing off about half of their revenue. Wii U, although not selling well, is still creating a good amount of revenue (hardware + software). They will have both a handheld and console, Iwata mentioned that handhelds and consoles will be like "brothers", they were separate entities. They won't be the same power-wise though, they'll just share OS, development environment and infrastructures. They'll probably also have the same CPU and GPU family, but with the console being more powerful, clock speeds higher, more CPU cores, more RAM, more shaders in the GPU, etc. He also mentioned that this integrated environment will be able to work with such vast differences in power, so there's no need for having the same power with each device.

But I still expect Mario Kart 9 for 4DS and Mario Kart X for Wii 2U, they can't be stupid enough to ignore free money like that.

47.4 3DS's + 7.9 Wii U's, and all those great games on one device?
I'd say higher than those combined right now, but those together would roughly be 55.3m, and neither are done. One hasn't even peaked

XBOX ONE/Wii U/3DS/PC

RIP Iwata 12/6/1959-7/11/2015

Thanks for all the great memories!

Nintendo is

Wii U: Mario Kart / Mario 2d / mario 3d / Zelda / Smash Bros / Pikmin / Maybe Fire Emblem / Maybe Metroid / Maybe Kirby / Maybe F-zero / Maybe Star Fox / Maybe Donkey Kong.

NEXT CONSOLE:
Mario Kart / Mario 2d / mario 3d / Zelda / Smash Bros / Maybe Pikmin / Maybe Fire Emblem / Maybe Metroid / Maybe Kirby / Maybe F-zero / Maybe Star Fox / Donkey Kong.

NEXT CONSOLE 2:
Mario Kart / Mario 2d / mario 3d / Zelda / Smash Bros / Maybe Pikmin / Maybe Fire Emblem / Maybe Metroid / Maybe Kirby / Maybe F-zero / Maybe Star Fox / Maybe Donkey Kong.

NEXT CONSOLE 3:
Mario Kart / Mario 2d / mario 3d / Zelda / Smash Bros / Maybe Pikmin / Maybe Fire Emblem / Maybe Metroid / Maybe Kirby / Maybe F-zero / Maybe Star Fox / Maybe Donkey Kong.

AD INFINITUM

What i´m saying is: the appeal is not the same anymore...

Metroid is all but confirmed, both Kirby and Star Fox are confirmed and Donkey Kong has already been released over 9 months ago. You're also missing some other key franchises, such as Paper Mario, Animal Crossing, Pokémon (spin-offs, but still), Yoshi, Mario Party and some others. And of course they're having new IPs such as The Wonderful 101, Captain Toad and Splatoon. The appeal will always be there because a lot of people like these games and want more experiences from them, especially considering every new installment in most of these franchises is very fresh and unlike the previous ones.

But you can see...a Nintendo console is timeless...so you don´t need to buy a nintendo console in a hurry. You can wait the end of the generation and buy a second hand nintendo console and have the same experience. It´s not good to Nintendo as it seens $$$.

Nintendo is too predictable.

I didn´t like wii. I have smash bros brawl, mario kart wii for example and it´s not fun to me anymore. Soulless..i don´t know how to explain. The only NINTENDO game I like in wii is Fire Emblem (My prefered game in game Cube). But...each new nintendo console I worry less and less about nintendo. If I have desire to play nintendo games in the future, i will buy a cheaper second hand nintendo console and play the 1 or 2 nintendo games I like these days. Nintendo is getting sick....worn brand. Poor sales.  Few options.

I played more than 5000 games easily  since 1981, I have 28 consoles (not handhelds)...and now the only kind of games i like is racing (real racing, not arcade racing), Fighting (not arcade fighting, i like street fighter, persona arena, guilty gear, mortal kombat), and TPS (Fire Emblem, Xcom, Civilization, Swords of Shogun...) Where these games are in a Nintendo Console? (not handheld, i HATE handheld).

If you DON´T like Mario Kart, 2d/3d adventure, 3d action and Smash Bros, you have no choice.....it ´s limited. It´s no use nintendo release a pikmin, for example, if you DON´T LIKE this kind of game. The fact its a nintendo game does not change this.

They need a BIG revolution! I like Nintendo, but the old Nintendo. In SNES you find any kind of game with too many choices. But its not true today...

It will sell about 70-75 million IMO if they execute properly (50-55 million portable variants, 15 million-ish of the home TV version). Which will be more than the XBox One this generation but probably not as much as the PS4.

People are confusing "hybrid" with "fusion" they are not the same thing, what Iwata is talking about is multiple devices that play the same games, like iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch are all separate devices, but the apps and OS are the same across them.

Nintendo's problem is while the Fusion does address several key needs for them and allows them to leverage their overall hardware base better, it still doesn't address the issue of smart devices chipping away at their handheld totals, and that decline will likely continue to impact them in the coming years.

But still at this point I think it's their best play. 70 million is still a plenty large userbase to sell a lot of software on and big enough that probably a lot of third parties will support it too (even though Nintendo really won't need as much support with all their software backing on one platform in essence).

That really depends on how good it is, what games it has, how well Nintendo advertise it and of course what price it is.

In this scenario I would say a worldwide 2016 release, Spring/Summer for the handheld variant and holidays for the console variant. In terms of power the handheld would be somewhere right in the middle of Vita & Wii U with the ability to render Wii U like visuals on a 5 inch or so screen. The console variant would be a slight upgrade over Wii U similar to the gap between GC and Wii, the extra gap in power over the handheld variant is to allow games to run at a higher resolution/framerate (1080p/60fps vs 720p/30fps). Price would be $199.99 at launch for each variant.

Games would be what u expect out of a typical Nintendo device, strong first party support, now that all games are playable on both devices, there would never be long droughts between major first party releases. Strong Japanese 3rd party support, all Nintendo handhelds had received this so no reason to believe it will end. Child-friendly western 3rd party titles, games such as Lego/Skylanders and a bunch of games based on Disney/Nickelodean/Cartoon Network shows and Pixar/DreamWorks movies. Nintendo has been doing good with indies lately, I expect this to continue and have stronger support from them in the following years.

Another thing is Nintendo needs to get the Virtual Console back up to snuff, even better than the Wii had, I also think they should do some sort of optional subscription service for it, perhaps $50/year gets u unlimited access to the VC. This is good for Nintendo because the average 3DS/Wii U owner likely doesn't spend $50/year on the VC and this gives consumers access to 100's of games for a low yearly fee.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

It depends on how Nintendo handles it! If it doesn't have long droughts, has some 3rd party support, is priced and marketed properly then I can see it sell at least 50 million!
