Forums - Sony - Could the PS Vita be a double generation handheld?

If the Vita could be called a double-generation console, then the PS2 should also be considered one.

The Vita's support is only going to drop from here. And that saddens me, actually. It had so much potential...

Its support will rise because of N3DS...

For multiplats...

Not really, even my cellphone outpaces the Vita.

In what sense? How many games on your phone look like killzone mercinaries.

Whether modern phones are more  powerful is kind of irrelevant because developers simply aren't going to utilise  that power.

For me it's more, those games just don't control right on any phones. The Xperia Play showed promise, but crashed in the market place. Without physical controls, 99% of game genres are severely held back. All I play on my phone is stuff that suits touch screen gameplay, which generally comes down to puzzle games.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Like it has been said, the Vita can last a bit longer  in Japan, but not in the West.. :/

It's in that spot right now where it's too powerful to make the best looking games for.  They're expensive to make, and then, not very many people actually have a Vita.  So, I was thinking about what the successor to the 3DS might be like in relation to the Vita.  Would it be safe to assume they would be compairable?  I don't see why Sony would bother making a vita successor that is more powerful than it, and create the same issue of problems the vita is dealing with right now.

Would it make more sense to create a new model for the Vita to go against the 3DS successor when it's released?  Shouldn't development for the Vita be cheaper in the next 3-4 years?  What if the console picked up momentum in the next two years or so?  I just wouldn't see a point in the next nintendo handheld being much stronger than the vita, if the games would become too expensive to develop.

Not sure what you  mean by too powerful..you do realize that both nVidia Shield Tablet and iPad Air 2 are generation ahead of Vita? And when I say generation ahead I mean PS4 to PS360 jump, not iPad Air 2 to iPad Air jump, which means they can currently run 7th gen console level games...like Trine 2 for example.

By the time next Nintendo handheld launches, that type of performance will be in most, if not every, mid-tier tablets...so they better have at least that kind of performance in their next device.

Vita's successor will definitely be aimed for the Japanese market only, because I don't think we'll ever see Sony releasing another dedicated portable gaming device in the west. Makes me think that they will focus completely on the cartonish/anime-ish oriented games and making a very cheap to manufacture handheld, so they can make profit very easily just like Nintendo's strategy with their hw.

...And they still have a strong following in Japan, though Vita was hurt a bit by its first promises of realistic games (something alien to the japanese crowd), they can still move great numbers if they just focus the strategy of what they've been taking with the Vita recently.

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

Not really. The GB was a double generational (it lived with the SNES and the N64), and its key to success was a cheap price and a variety of games (with a bit of help from Tetris and Pokemon, to be fair). The Vita is more expensive than the 3DS (including console, memory card and PS subscription), and it has way less varied content than its competitors (both 3DS and mobile).

This is just an outright lie at this stage. Mobile has more variety, but no physical controls. Vita lineup is far more varied than the 3DS' though.

Also Vita has been the cheaper of the two handhelds for a good while now, unless you count the 2DS which is only about £15 cheaper but with nowhere near as much included. Heck Nintendo don't even include a PSU in the box with the 3DS XL.

Also why are you bringing PS+ into it? It's entirely optional on Vita and just provides free games.

Ok, I hadn't seen those prices. In my regular stores they sell regular 3DS way cheaper than Vitas, I wasn't counting the XL model. 3DS XL bundles are more expensive than Vita bundles.  Also, I have found that some retailers sell the Vits memory card for more than 120€, while others sell it for 80. It's still expensive as hell, but with 120 € you can buy a 2DS bundle, lol.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Regular 3DS is pretty much sold out in the UK it would seem, though Amazon have one for £136 without any games included I saw.

But yeah here, your options are 2DS which is about the same price as a Vita + Memory Card + Download Voucher for games if it has a game bundled. Or 3DS XL which costs a good chunk more without anything included.

Never seen such expensive memory cards, you can import 64gb cards from Japan for less than that! >_< In the UK, it's 4gb/8gb/16 cards with a download pack of games (Mega Pack, Indie Pack, Racing Pack, Lego Pack, Action Pack etc.) for £20-£30-£40 for the most part.

That said, I really don't get why they don't start putting a decent amount of onboard memory on the systems. I get when it was proprietary memory cards they had the premium because of that, but 1gb onboard is a joke. I don't get why they don't just shove 32-128gb onboard and be done with it.

Well, handheld gaming is supposed to be cheaper than home console gaming. A 32 gb memory card would add 15-25 € more to the original price. 1-4gb is fine if someone is never going to use the digital store. But yeah, there's no reason why the XL model doesn't have 8-16gb at least. It comes without AC adaptor already, they should at least guarantee memory space.

Sorry for the confusion, I was actually ranting at Sony over that. Vita is far more digital oriented than the 3DS. Many of it's bigger games are becoming digital only. Some games clock in at 4gb each and it's not possible to buy them on a cartridge. I have a 32gb card and despite over 100 of my Vita games being physical, I'm at a point where I am constantly having to delete things to put new stuff on for the digital stuff and game patches :(

If i really want to play a shooter, I'll go on my Xbox 360 (or you know, Modern Combat 5: Blackout). I have a 3DS and I'm loving that.
