Forums - Gaming - WRPGs Vs JRPGs.

Which is better overall?

JRPGs. 133 70.00%

WRPGs. 57 30.00%

Total:190

I'll opt for jrpgs. I used to be more about western ones but I'm getting a bit jaded by them. A lot of grinding and repetitive combat... Something I used to accuse JRPGs of. Many like elder scrolls seem to opt for quantity over quality and that no longer impresses me like it used to.

Obviously both are big genres and there are many games but typically I expect JRPG's have better stories, gameplay and game design. Both are frequently contaminated with too much grinding and boring gameplay.

If I had to give favourite RPG right now (ignoring nostalgia goggles) I might actually opt for fire emblem: awakened. I'm feeling a little jaded by both western and Japanese rpg's right now, to be honest.

Jrpgs when they try to be Wrpgs.... in other words the soul series.

You should also look for Dragon's Dogma, which incidentally tries to be WRPG being an JRPG. Souls and DD are both of the best things that ever spawned the seventh gen.

Ya I actually kinda agree with this. By and large I vastly prefer WRPGs, however I have to say the results of some Japanese devs making western style RPGs (such as the Souls series, and Dragon's Dogma) are absolutely fantastic, and I do consider them some of the best RPGs out there.

Yeah i played it really good game, (got the game with expansions on PS Plus) i just forgot to name it since i have souls on the top of my mind when it comes to those types of games.

I've always seen the two as completely different genres. Comparing a WRPG like Skyrim to a JRPG like Final Fantasy VII is like trying to compare Survival Horror games like Silent Hill to an Action Horror games like Dead Space. They only share vague thematic similarities.

But...I'd have to say WRPGs are better at everything apart from music, that would have to be a tie.

Best not stop with just these 2 genres

I like great games.

If only that were true. Unfortunately it isn't

In 1997 JPRGs were actually good, now in their attempts to 'westernise' them devs have made them all crap.

Yeah. But they have lost momentum and not "relevant" anymore. I am glad for this.
