They did. Early GTA games had gangs and if you messed with them they would attack you every time they saw you, starting with pistols and going to flamethrowers and bazookas as you were gathering they hste, or they would help you with the police or other gangs if you were their friend.

I dunno if you're talking about GTA 1&2 because I've never played them, but I know that in GTA III and onwards they didn't really do that.

They would attack you if you attacked them first, but after they lost agro they'd go back to doing normal things. Although if you pissed them off in the story of the game (Like the Triads and Mafia in GTA III) they would attack you on sight.

I'm talking about GTA 2 in special, as GTA 1 I did play too little to know if it had it as well (I remember it did had Yakuza).
In GTA 2 each stage had 3 gangs, and each had a "friendship bar", if you get it down they hunt you, if you get it up they help you.
Kinda like Bully.

You can't play through GTAIII's story without the triads, mafia, and the cartels hating you.  That does so happen in GTAIII and I hate driving around certain areas, because I don't want to be shot at.

But, if you make GTA too close to real life, it gets boring.  You get wanted stars, etc.  There is consequence on some levels, but nothing too extreme.  It would get boring.  It's too easy to kill someone, steal cars.  That's the main premise of the game.  Being a criminal.  If being a criminal, which is what the game is all about, punishes you for playing it the way it was meant to be played, it wouldn't be fun.

Imagine if sonic 2 took away your momentum for going fast, because Sonic needs to catch his breath to make the game more realistic....

Wow, that's actually really cool :O

if you can endure the graphics and the camera angle (totally on top), I really recommend to give it a try.
GTA 4 was great, GTA 5 was superb, but GTA 2 is still the most fun to play of all of them. I can't compare it to the quality of the new games, but I still had lots of fun with it, it's great.
I went killing the shit out of them just to invade their bases and see them coming with bazookas for my head, hahaha, so funny. (even when they do hit you xD).
Damn, I just wanna play it again right now XD

It's free now so I'll give it a shot ^^

I think GTA shold have the Saints Row system. Where you have a wanted level for gangs too. Although in GTA IV/V gangs hardly played in to it all. It was cool going around Los Santos in San Andreas and being able to see who was part of which gang, but in IV/V they all just kinda blend together :/

It's free? Where, Steam?

Nope, GTA 1&2 are free on Rockstar's website http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/ :)

Make a new IP, GTA is damn perfect the way it is.

That's nice.
They should also be free on PSN.

Ikr, it's really annoying that Steam still charges like £8 for them or something.

Because none of that is fun?

I just want a GTA with epic cheats. Rockstar used to go all out with the cheats, it seems they don't care about the cheats so much anymore.

It's the reason why San Andreas will always be the best GTA IMO. The cheats kept me coming back just to fool around.

From jet packs to flying cars and even exploding every vehicle in sight at once. San Andreas had it all.
